Great question. Let me ponder.
Meh, you must be onto something. We totally regressed in that area

To the original question, I think less racist generally, but there is a strong public push by mainstream conservatives to legitimize racism today, which is very destructive. More intellectual conservatives are in a tough spot. However, the present core of conservatism is anti-intellectual. They are embracing racism as some kind of pride move
There's crazies on both sides, no doubt. However, there a significantly more people on the left that push ideals that are out of touch with reality and that put people in "groups" than on the right. Liberals box everybody into a group which is something they preach and preach about being racist or sexist.

Are you serious? You are asking if America today is more racist than a time when it was institutionalized and sanctioned, and black people had to ride in the back of the bus, weren't allowed in white restaurants, went do different schools, used different bathrooms, and drank out of different water fountains?
Backlash from an overly harsh reconstruction.
The Civil War, and it’s aftermath, damaged this nation in so many ways. IMO chattel slavery would have ended naturally with the rise of industrialization and wouldn’t have needlessly destroyed so many lives.
You would have seen widespread manumission and a gradual and natural development of ethnic conclaves.
Instead you had these forceful pushes of the pendulum that made the swing back even worse.
ETA: slavery was the absolute worst thing that could have happened to the fledging US.

Blacks are much more racist than everyone else. It is what it is.
Some, (the Jessie Jacksons, Al Sharpton's, Maxine Waters, Obamas, etc.etc...) must keep race in the forefront at all times, for them to be in the limelight. Otherwise, they have no way to convince their "followers" of the debt the white man "owes" them!

All can be connected back to “The Great Society” and the development of a welfare state. Which can be traced back to FDR.
ETA: Which can be traced back to the 19th amendment.
Which can be traced back to WW1
Which can be traced back to Gavrilo Princip.

Entropy: Universe Trends Toward Disorder
Entropy usually refers to the idea that everything in the universe eventually moves from order to disorder
Now think about "Human Nature" understanding that Nature trends to Chaos. When things are left to "human nature" as a whole, you get 3rd world chaos.
Civilizations are built around establishing and enforcing order ie "LAWS". Major accomplishments (pyramids, great walls, aqueducts, railroads etc) are constructed for the betterment of human civilization...as long as "human nature" is oppressed.
The Real but unfortunate implication is if you have a people in your society who trend to chaos over order, you MUST oppress their human nature, it's actually for their own good.
IMHO, You give people a shot, 10 years, and if they can't seem to act in an orderly, synergistic way with society, then you MUST continue to control their nature until they can get their shite together.
I really feel that unlimited freedom was the wrong way to establish an equal society. This should have been done in tiers that allowed a people a chance to acclimate to their new freedom and progress to equality in a systematic way.
It's like giving a kid at 13 no curfew, what will that kid do? Stay up til 2 am or later? Now imagine you give that same 13 year old kid....alcohol, drugs, credit, food vouchers for whatever he wants. What will his diet be, will he overdose, will he be able to pay back what he borrows? YOU GAVE HIM TOO MUCH AND HE DIDN'T KNOW HOW TO HANDLE IT!
Not against rights, they just should be in the hands of responsible people.

In the 40s, I would imagine things.. "were what they were".. Whites treated blacks a certain way and it wasn't because they hated blacks, it was just actions of their time.
Blacks couldn't vote, they were not given the same rights as white people. They didn't receive the same type of education, etc, etc.. So whites didn't have that much of a problem with blacks, they just saw them as 2nd class citizens and as long as they didn't cause trouble everything was good.
When blacks started having the same rights, they started to become a threat to white people which caused tensions to rise and we are still stuck in that same situation.

It's sad no matter how you dice it. If you judge someone solely based on their race, you're a frickwad.

Well in the 1940s if a black man tried to flirt with a white woman he would be beaten or killed in some areas.
It's much better today. A lot of criticisms made on block people today aren't racist or done out of hate, they are facts and people don't want to face truth. The problems in the black community will never be solved until we can both sides can honestly talk about the real issues and the solutions instead of beating around the bush worrying about being racist. I would love block people as a group to be more successful, but that will require a change in culture and focus on education, work, and family.
Whites are successful because we are white. Color has nothing to do with it. It's about the values you hold and the culture you promote

Pretty much.
And if you completely ignore the larger trends and evidence, you’re an idiot.
Basically, use your intellect. Don’t be naive at first, but don’t allow your own prejudices to override evidence that challenges them.

Illegitimacy rates, 1940-2010
From the article:
quote:
Whites do not care – they just like looking down on Blacks. They are not being “concerned”, they are being racist.
Shut it down boys.
I’m not concerned about the consequences of a large portions of our society having 5+ kids out of wed lock, absent fathers, no emphasis on education, and letting the streets raise these kids.
I’m just another white racist.

Why not be concerned about it? We (the taxpayers) have to subsidize those 5+ kids.

What do illegitimacy rates have to do with racial oppression?
You could argue that lack of both parents causes social and financial problems. While true, it does excuse racial barriers implemented by government and private firms.
As for the OP. No , 2017 is far less oppressive than 1940.

This is a heavily debated topic on many history forums.
If we have a No Civil War scenario:
1. Slavery doesn't end until "possibly" 1930.
The modern tractor wasnt perfected until this time.
2. A potential lag behind other western powers technologically. All other modern nations had already abolished slavery.
3. Every other social movement may just be delayed. Civil Rights would still not be granted in most Southern states and some Union ones until far later in the timeline.
A natural end to slavery would not prevent societal oppression.
