Are people from Ansley, MS hicks or coonasses?

River Trash is also acceptable.
I'm mid 50's from BR and I've heard and said coon arse all of my life and not once have I heard anyone offended by it and I know plenty of real coon asses including my brother in law from Delcambre. He doesn't give a shite. Now call him a dumbass and he'll beat you into Tuesday.

In Lafayette I always took coonass as a compliment. Almost like calling someone a true Cajun and not some Yankee from Alec that moved here a couple years ago.
Did the offended have a Bernie 2016 sicker on their car by chance?

The history of the term is disputed, but the theory that makes the most sense to me is that the term "coonass" comes from the French word "connasse," which basically is simultaneously a vulgar insult and term of endearment that can be roughly translated to "dumb arse bitch". Cajuns used to use the word to refer to eachother, and anglo-americans thought it was funny and transposed it to "coonass."

There are Alabama and Texas A&M fans that use the term as a pejorative. So I'm okay with them never using the word, because they mean to offend when they say it.

I recently found out that Dago is a pretty offensive term. I thought it was in the same neighborhood as coonass until I said it in front of an Italian person.

Anyone who gets triggered by terms like these is a mega bitch in my book.

I always find it funny when coonasses, who decended from a bunch of Canadian criminals, call true southern people Yankees. It really emphasizes thier clueless stupidity.

Your joke was on point and pretty funny. I'm born in the Cajun heartland and live in Baton Rouge. I guarantee you this person is not a Cajun. No Cajun would get all whiney like this about it.

Actually, coonass is offensive, primarily to older generations.
With every respect to your father, he probably didn't like the word "arse" in it, and thought it was vulgar and didn't want young people using it because it sounds like a cuss word. My dad who was likely his age, felt the same.. They're the kids born after WW II, the greatest generation and were more formal and strict than we are today.

Again I'm in my mid 50's and I've heard and said Dago all my life and not once have I heard an Italian be offended. Nor do my spic or chink friends get offended by me the drunk mick.
My "n-word" friends don't get to worked up either.
Now my kike and zipper head friends are a different story.

So coonassness stops at the river?

My dad hunted with an sure enough Italian who had retriever named Dago. When it died he replaced it with one named Whop. True story

I'm from north BR, am 1/4 Boudreaux, and never found it offensive. My Grandmother, 100% Cajun from Ascension Parish, used it all the time. When I use it in CA, they think it's offensive.

A few years ago a group of S LA folks asked me about a N LA restaurant that served Cajun food. I told them the food was good and the place was a typical coonass operation. No one got overly offended but several were clearly unhappy with my use of the term.

Coo arse would be an offensive term to most groups, but the Cajuns fortunately have pretty thick skin and are able to take jabs like that in stride.

We have a friend from NO in DFW who used that term in her office and got fired.
