Anyone claiming to be from LA below I-10 who tells you they are offended by "coonass" is a straight up carpetbagging liar.

You should've told him that since he's from Baton Rouge he's not a coonass and he should STFU.

That was my thought

I've got to be honest, I don't know the nuances of Louisiana culture and regions. Other than a brother-in-law who is a proud Yat (seriously, he wears t-shirts with the expression and whatnot), I'm confused on the Cajun/Creole borders.

It was also a girl that looked to be in her late 20's, early 30's. Austin is swamped with "social justice warriors" and that's why I posed the question on TD.

I always loved the below 1-10 stuff. There are plenty of places below 1-10 that are not remotely coonass/cajun. Yet there are few places as coonass as Aoyelles, St Landry or Evangeline Parishes.

Uhh, this doesn't invalidate the statement that anyone below I-10, who is unavoidably steeped in or just very cognizant of the culture, would not be offended by the term.

No.

Redneck is offensive to a connass, however.

Where's the line? In TN there is a gray area on the East side of Nashville where Redneck turns to Hillbilly. I've never been offended to be called either. River Trash is also acceptable.

I blame Mizzou, I never heard Hillbilly when I lived in TN, in MO they have Hillbilly stores, restaurants, and actual hillbilly's.

FWIW, Baton Rouge and the areas North of it to the MS border are probably more Mississippi hick than they are Cajun. Just something to consider about the offended person.

Well I don't know what kind of people you associate with, but I've lived in Baton Rouge my whole life and have family all over the New Iberia/Lafayette/Jeanerette area and it is a term of endearment to anyone from around these parts who doesn't have a stick up their arse.

Now, I won't argue that the inflection with which it is spoken and who the speaker is might make a world of difference
