I don't find any term offensive.

Most of us from Vermilion Parish don't care one way or the other.

I find it annoying and off putting when non-Cajuns say it but I'm offended at all.

She sounds like a bitch...
And NO, it's not offensive

Yeah that is mostly my point too. I don't think someone is necessarily offended by it, but they'll give you a look that basically says "you haven't earned the right to call me a coonass."
The more coonass you are, the more true that would be.

Nah, I don't think it would be taken as well as most in here are suggesting. In many ways it is like the n-word, perfectly acceptable among other coonasses, but if an out-of-towner walked into a bait shop in Delcambre or Bayou Black and said "do you coonasses sell shrimp" he would definitely get a few crooked looks.
That isn't to say that people would be offended or a fight is about to break out, but everyone would stop and look at the guy.
That's because of the connotation and placement you're insinuating. I could say "Do you white people sell shrimp?" and I'd get crooked looks as you put it.
In the OP's story, no coonass would be offended. They ESPECIALLY wouldn't be offended enough to say something.
I am not guessing here. I grew up in South Louisiana too. I have heard people who aren't coonasses call people coonasses plenty of times in my life. I had Ole Miss friends who'd say that to my South LA friends and they'd all say something like "Damn right!".

I don't find the term "coonass" offensive but implying that "coonasses" eat roadkill is.

Not many people from Baton Rouge are Cajun though.
This is true.
And like someone else said, the older guys don't like it moreso because its a curse word.

No kidding. Always ready to apologize because they hurt someone's feelings.

As did I (minus the Ole Miss friends). It is a term of endearment, but to suggest just anyone can use it without consequence would be wrong. Like I said in my post, it is much like the n-word with an -a, I wouldn't suggest using it in mixed company if you don't know the people, because it is going to be weird.
ETA: It obviously depends on the context too. The point is that there are situations and times where I wouldn't advise it. If you don't know for sure, don't use it.

Was gonna post this. My family is Italian. We don't get offended over those terms. If words hurt you then you have bigger problems

It was used as an insult more often decades ago. Like any "offensive" term it all about intent.

The n-word is not offensive to me coming from another black person.
I'm sure the same can be said with c-arse coming from a fellow c-arse.
When I think of the term, I just think about hard working people who can cook food, fix shite, and damn near do anything possible with their hands, even if they look bummed out .

They're fairly similar, the biggest difference being the worst case scenario for misuse of the n-word is much worse than misusing coonass.

quote:True, both will get you fricked up if said at the wrong place/wrong time. I know plenty of c-arse people, but I just call them by their birth name, and they call me by mine, at least when we are face-to-face.
