I own a truck now because we have a boat to tow. In a couple years, I'll be able to have my son drive the truck and I've been thinking I'd go back to a car for daily travel.

The Lexus IS series has always been in my mind as an affordable car that doesn't look like a grocery wagon, but also 'appears' to be a driver's car. Agree/Disagree? Any other recommendations?

It's probably the most fun of any Lexus, but I think the 4-series is a much better option.

What kind of passenger capacity do you need?

Mazda 6 is a drivers car

Mini Coopers are ridiculously fun to drive.

Run away from anything german, or british.
IS series, and most acuras, are pretty damn sporty. Get something japanese with paddle shifters.

Maybe if you get the F sport package, otherwise I don’t think they’re known as a “drivers” car.

In that same segment, the Alfa Romeo Giulia is probably the best handling car. Then there are the stalwarts: BMW 3 series, Mercedes C-Class, Audi A3. Of those three, I’d look at the C-Class with some sort of AMG package or the 3 series with the M sport package (not the same as M2/M3).

It's zippy and corners really well, but at 6'4" I was extremely uncomfortable in it.

Same. Wife test drove one and my head was physically touching the ceiling.

Forgot to mention the Genesis G70 and the Kia Stinger. Keep in mind the Stinger is a bit larger. Both cars have gotten rave reviews and the G70 interior in high end trim is gorgeous. Both are great values in the segment.

Define fun to drive. BMW is better at performance but is not as reliable as a Lexus.

Actually only a Porsche is as reliable as a Lexus.

And when a BMW breaks and you are out of warranty get ready to pay a lot. Also regular maintenance such as LOF and brakes are a lot more expensive.

Good luck.

Yes you should. Even Infiniti seems to be overlooking Infiniti. They are very far behind competitors right now.

Meh. Not really. It is more of a comfortable ride than anything. I rented one earlier this year when I was replacing the clutch on my Acura.

The IS250 is underwhelming and underpowered. Lots of body roll when cornering too. It has the same 4-banger engine as the Camry.

If you're looking for a similar car in the class with more performance, I'd look at the Audi A4 Quattro or Acura TLX A-Spec. I'm not a huge fan of Infiniti but the G37 is fun to drive with RWD and a big engine.
