Is the best way to go about life is not caring what others think about you?

Besides professionally where it can affect your livelihood, do you think it's best to not care what others think? This would go along lines of farting in an airplane, cutting people off on the interstate, things of that nature.

I think it's pretty important to care about what important people in your life think about you.
Keep yourself in shape and cleaned up so your spouse thinks highly of you.
Feed and play with your kids so they want you around.
Do well at your job so your boss cares about you.
But Jethro on the ot who wants to judge you because you prefer ketchup on your hot dog... Yeah, frick that guy.

You can exercise common courtesy and decency without caring about what other people think.
Most people who say "they don't care what people think" really do care - a lot. They cover themselves in piercings and tattoos, dye their hair purple, and then get pissed when people "look at them." Why? They were doing it for attention in the first place.
ETA: On the other hand, you have the hordes of overweight people who don't care, but should.
Then, they demand that the world adjust to them.

There is a large gap between being independant/strong minded, and being the a-hole that you describe.

No, would suggest knowing what you believe, why you believe what you believe and live what you believe. Stay open but filter through above. Don't become uncaring but don't allow others to determine your destination

Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.
It's actually a pretty easy rule to follow.

How you treat people is different from caring about others opinion of you.

Overall, yes. Probably good to care what your wife and kids think of you though

There's some things that are important and you should care about. Listening to what other people say about you can help identify a flaw with yourself you couldnt see on your own so you can fix it...
But for the most part, no. Most things people comment on about others is petty and doesn't need to be worried about. As long as you're not hurting anyone, you're happy, and you think you're doing the right thing then other peoples opinions don't matter.

I wouldn't say you shouldn't care what anybody thinks about you, but it's good to know what's important and what's not.

I have lots of tattoos and had piercings and never gave a frick what people thought of me, except when they offered their unsolicited opinion of my life choices. Still didn't care but then they got to find out just how I felt about them offering their unsolicited opinion.
I hate judgement fricks that feel everyone should live by their standards. Which incidentally makes up 90% of the OT.

It's not abnormal to be less self-conscious and courteous at the same time.

I exercise common courtesy and I don't purposely try to give people a reason to like me, but if they don't for whatever reason, I can honestly way I don't give a single frick. If they do not have any value to me then who cares? In fact, I like to know that there are people who dislike me. I don't know why, I think it has to do with.. if someone doesn't like me then I know they don't feel sorry for me.
When it comes to people "looking at me", I have had people stare at me for most of my life so I just frick with people now. I will stare at them back and then continue to stare at them and it's funny when I can tell when it starts making them feel uncomfortable.

The only people who I really care what they think about me is my boss and my family. I really don't give anyone a reason to not like me but, if they don't, it really doesn't bother me.

Think of a 3rd world county were lines dont exist, people hang off busses, every price is a haggle where someone is trying to get the most out of you.....that's the society of "not caring what anyone thinks about you"
It boggles my mind that our societies have, for thousands of years, worked to increase civilities. Yet for the last 10-20 years, 1st world countries have devolved into the lowest common denominator of "tolerance" to uncivilized behavior.
In pretty much every other aspect: technology, medicine, etc...we work to uplift the lesser evolved society to a more modern standard, but when it comes to common courtesy...."nah, dats just da way dey is, tolerance you bigot!"

I'm in this number, but the world is my oyster. Don't like it, that's your prerogative, but I love being me.
