I grew up in New Orleans, but haven't lived there for over 30 years. The North Shore used to be a nice place to live, but I have no idea what it's like now. One of my brothers lived in Mandeville and the other in Slidell. I remember liking both places, although both brothers are deceased now, and we no longer have family in the area. All of our remaining family fled to Mississippi after Katrina

Anyway, we're looking at a house in Slidell. It's a beautiful house with a nice yard at a great price. The pull of home is strong as we get older, but I just don't know the area any longer

Any opinions would be welcome

I lived on the water out there for a while and liked it.

What part of town are you thinking about?

There's a reason why you can get a really "nice" house, really cheap. Before you buy a house out there look at the crime stats as well as the flood premiums.

Not spectacular, but also not nearly as bad as OTers will tell you. Better than BR at any rate

Do you have school age children? That factors in a lot of the answer

Eden Isle is a place I would consider living. We had a camp on Carr Dr. before Katrina took it away. I love Slidell, though you’re probably going to get a lot of hate. for some reason folks love bashing it here.

I mean it’s not Mandeville but it’s probably good enough

Lived in Slidell for about a decade over a decade ago. Our experience there was > 95% positive. IDK how much things have changed since.

It gets criticized a lot on this board and wrongfully so IMO.

It has:
- proximity to an amazing fishery
- close to NOLA (this was a positive then; not sure if still the case)
- easy access to LSU
- easy access to AL/FL beaches
- underrated restaurants (Palmettos, Southside, Pecks, Kenney's, etc)

Have lived in Katy (Cinco Ranch), Wake Forest, NC, and south Merritt Island, FL and easily enjoyed out time in Slidell more than any of these.

As someone else noted, check your flooding concerns. I think the levee system was all changed after we left.

Best wishes and God bless!

Grew up and lived in Slidell until College. Live in Covington now. It’s not the same place it was before Katrina but it still has nice areas and you can live on the water for dirt cheap comparatively.

ETA: Saw you’re looking at Lake Village - not a bad area at all and those are going to be zoned for the best schools.

Slidell seems really polarizing. I work with a bunch of people who live in Slidell and love it.

The OT has a lot of posters here who hate it, but I’ve always assumed it was people from Covington / Mandeville who look down on it.
