As a parent of three, I'm a firm believer in kids need to have time to be kids. I'm not giving every part of my life up to do travel anything every weekend. Sorry. Everything in moderation you know?

Do you have other kids that go with y'all??

I sure as hell wouldn't be running him around like that for soccer. Talk about a waste of money.

No doubt. They need to enjoy lots of different sports. I think it will help them with other life experiences also. Learning different rules of the games and teamwork associated with a particular sport is important for growth.

Its not bad if he likes it. It's not like pitching or throwing curve balls year round.

And soccer is a pain in the arse, the "season" basically runs from August to the following May (and into June for older age groups).

Yea, U11 is really the start of select ball here, but those teams are pretty much locked down once they form. It's invitation only, no open tryouts,

The movement to birth year classification for teams is going to shake things up in Louisiana soccer next year, especially for teams that are split down the middle in terms of ages. A lot of players are going to be torn between playing up to stay with their teammates or playing their true age.

I did the same thing with soccer (and other sports, played everything I could ) and my parents and the other parents just worked together on it. Unless it was a big tournament, probably half the parents were there because they just picked weekends to shoulder the burden. Just make friends with the parents and help each other out. I didn't feel neglected because my parents missed some tournaments and I still don't now. Everyone needs a breather.

Our team is all '06, but yea it'll be strange for some U10 kids to move to U12. My boy played two full years of U10, so 11s will be perfect for him. It shall be interesting if some coaches would rather keep their team together and play their kid up, or reconstitute a team. We'll be all up in the middle of that. I hope it calms down after that turmoil so these can get some consistency. My boys been on so many different teams it's funny. He doesn't even have jerseys for his club right now because he was picked up mid season.

After experiencing this last year and this year...yes! Son is 13 and plays AAU basketball and also plays baseball. Way too much to balance both as both want him there full time. Additionally, he still needs time to be a kid too.

With that said, this will be the last year playing AAU basketball. Eventhough basketball is his best sport he is a decent baseball player too. I don't want him to just play one sport which will lead to muscle fatigue, join/tendon fatigue and most importantly...mental fatigue. Kids need balance.

I am sort of dealing with this right now with my son. He did not play year round but with rec and all stars he would play at least 6 months.

This was basketball, he has been playing since he was 7 and not he is about to be in 10th grade and does not really want to play anymore.

His reason he is just burnt out

He is still on the fence about it.

Oh it may be mandatory here as well, but that's not how teams will be filled. I wish they would, even if it were closed to current club players or by invitation, but I think we either get an invitation to play on another coach's team or we'll 'try out' for our current team.

Do flowers bloom all year long?

Take it for what its worth:

I "interact" with people who have retired from the NFL and MLB. They do not encourage year round same sport participation. They all played seasonal sports and had "family time" events in the summer.

I also "interact" with current families who do the year round travel sports. Most cannot find balance in family life and health/wellness trying to maintain this "busy" lifestyle. The sad part is that the kids will replicate this pattern because that will be all they know (work harder and longer at all expense)

Teach him to work efficiently and find balance in all aspects of his life.

The "year round" appeal is more for parental dick measuring...

Yes. Dr. James Andrews has some good insight on this. Basically over working on muscle group w/o sufficient rest. Switvhing to different sports as the year goes on gives your body time to recuperate from the last season
