That's identical to GCUs Academy program we were in. It was great. My boy loved, still does, the coaches in that program because it was real hands on skill development.

These tournaments aren't as taken seriously as people imagine. My son DGAF if they win or lose, he tries as hard as he can from whistle to whistle and then it's over. They really emphasis skill development over a winning strategy. Hell my boy scored three goals in 10 minutes as a left forward then didn't play that position the rest of the tournament because 'he needs to work on his crosses'. Coach didn't like the cutback shot and so that was it. Everyday in practice he gets my son to cross with his left, and until he can do it well he won't play that position for any significant time.

It's just playing time the coaches can use as teachable moments...

Age 9, been at it since this time last year...just wondering if a summer off is better for him or not. It's soccer. Academy>Rec>Select...I'm damn ready for a break, I just feel guilty making the decision based on my level of GAF. Literally every single weekend we're out of town for a tournament, and every night but Friday he has some form of practice.

It's too much, he'll burnout and more importantly, you're the parent. The kid shouldn't be the center of family life - they're just part of the family. I've never understood this total dedication to juniors amateur sports career - he's not going pro.

Damn, I'd love to play on a court that nice.

ETA: Serious ball toss there.

I'd be so damn nervous watching my son play tennis. My parents had to stop coming out for my tournaments, I was such head case. It's such a mental game...and the line between positive pressure and negative thoughts manifesting themselves 'out there' is fuzzy at best. I was way, way too hard on myself.

When I play now though the demons seem mostly gone.

There's a lot of crazy parents out there on the USTA junior circuit; myself included.

Eta I have been reprimanded by the USTA before for using too harsh of language in a formal grievance I filed against one of my daughter's opponents. And I still think I'm more on the normal side of the scale compared to some tennis parents.

I've had to learn to tone it down myself. One of the better choices I've ever made. I'm still far from the quiet guy at the park, but I've made progress.

Hmmm ok. Well she's 12 years old. I'm confident her form will continue to improve.

He's going to be burned out by high school. I started playing soccer year round when I was like 12 or 13 and when I was a senior in high school, I wanted nothing to do with college soccer. Took me a couple of years to not hate playing .
I think the burnout at late hs age has little to do with what age you started. IMO, it has more to do with wanting to go to parties on weekends and NOT be in another state playing an 8am game. By senior year only a few gung-ho kids are still really into it (those wanting to play college usually).

Looks like she's just trying to kick in a second serve. Hopefully her racket dips back down a bit before she starts her motion, but it's hard to tell from a still.

My coach always taught to mask your shot, so if that's the same racket position she hits a slice from it could just be ingrained at this point to automatically bring it up there.

Her opponent may not have the angle to tell she's leaning back for a kick instead of a more neutral stance for a slice.

All they want to do is play ball. If it was solely up to them they would spend every waking hour on the diamond. They both know what they want to do, how to go about doing it and what it takes to get where they want to go. They're chasing a dream and working towards obtaining their goals. I guess that's why they both start on Varsity, as freshman, in the largest HS classification in the state.

No, we do not always allow them to do what they want. But what kind of parent would hold their kids back from chasing a dream, especially if they're excelling in the sport?

Also, their "down time" is the 3 months where they only train twice a week, for an hour each session. So they have their down time, but they'd still rather be playing ball.
