is it too late to go back to college in your 40s?

Have been pretty successful in my career even without a degree though it's been a struggle to compete without it.
Is it worth it to go back to college and get a degree or should one just be happy with their lot in life?

Had an over 50 guy in my undergrad engineering program. Worked out fine for him.

No, it's not too late. Is it cost effective? Will it open new opportunities for you? Or qualify you for what you already do? Even so, it can be worth it from a pride standpoint alone.

It's never too late to go back to school. I recommend it to anyone considering it.

This sounds pretty miserable. I don't think 40's is too late, because you still have at least 20 years of work left (on average).
Do you want a degree applicable to your experience, or are you interested in changing career paths?

It worked out OK for Thornton Mellon and he was even older.

I'm in my 40's and my company recently paid for me to take enough hours to sit for CPA exams. Nights and weekends, not day classes. I'm glad I did it, and as a bonus found the classes were tremendously easier than when I had no adult life experience. Opened new opportunities as well.

Nope. Go for it.

I would struggle if I had to go back and take math or statistics classes.
With that said, graduate school is easy especially if you have that much work experience. Plus, a lot of graduate coursework is online now making it that much easier to complete on your own time rather than having to go sit in class same day, same time every week.
I did it with one kid, could not have done it with two though, or it would have been much harder.

Seems like you beat the "system" of higher education. Why do you want spend a bunch of money or get into debt just to fit in with the rest of society.
If I could have found success I wouldn't dare think of buying into the "College is required for success scheme"
Will you make that much more money assuming this debt? Look at the ROI baw. Spend $60k to make $10k more a year for the next 5 years or invest that $60k.

No age limit as long as you have the tuition money.

I'm 29, not 40, but being back in school is fun and miserable.
It's fun to learn basic stuff that you didn't, but you'll be annoyed by stuff like :
being taught something that has nothing to do with the class, teachers that judge, and think they're better than you when honestly most college teachers/professors are the ones who couldn't hack it in their field, students who give you dirty looks because they're stuck in that high school "I'm better than you" phase.
Positives outweigh all those small issues. Love seeing those young kids having similar views, knowing they aren't all one minded before higher education makes them more liberal. Lol. I enjoy labs and interacting. And I can tell kids are interested from my adventures in life before college at age 29.
TL;DR Just do it and see if you like it.
