re: Is it time to reconsider mandatory public high school education?

Kids make incredibly dumb decisions.
Giving them to option to forgo high school will see massive amounts of dropouts and further exasperate the skilled labor force.
I'm for how some countries mandate 2 - 4 years of military service after high school though.

Sure. Send a child out into the world with zero education and no job prospects seems like a great idea.
The reality is when these troublemakers leave school, they aren't going to have any of those things.
They aren't headed into the world, they are headed into the criminal justice system.

Then people would say that public schools are racist.
People will say whatever they want. But if every child has the choice to receive a free, high quality education, then it is not racist.
We need to stop being held back by the racism pandering brigade.

What about the other kids who show up to learn everyday and gets their day interrupted by this kid who doesn't want to be there? When do people think about these kids?
That's the point of my OP.
I'm tired of those kids - who are the vast majority of students - getting screwed over by these few troublemakers who, honestly, aren't going to ever change or be productive anyways.

Not so sure about that.

I know as it right now, many of these teens are already getting into trouble. But without mandatory schooling, I would wager you can double or even triple that number.
Most of them would sleep until noon, so maybe only two or three more hours of trouble potential. And we have a criminal justice system.

I’m stating flat out that if you are failing and distracting students via violence or disruptive behavior consistently you should be expelled and sent to an alternate school.
no i agree
in 9th grade should have to declare...trade or college route.
if you go college route it should be no nonsense. gone with any type of BS. Cant have class disruptors in the class messing up education for those that want to go
in some ways this is how advanced classes have become. NO BS.
in the trade path...should be a little more leeway but not much. either you buy in or you are gone.

Yup.
So my kids are in advanced classes and they don't have disruption in class.
However, they see plenty of fights in the hallways between classes and at lunch.
And, what if my kids weren't smart enought to be in advanced classes? The "regular" classes are non-stop interruptions.

That is a laughable statement. At work?
Ever heard of a latch-key kid? We were all the rage in the 80s, and I never robbed a department store out of boredom.

many schools are nothing but a glorified day care.
FIFY. That's why the left is always bleating about universal pre-k.
Whomever said, "high quality," congrats on using a meaningless, undefined phrase designed only to evoke feelings in people, not facts or results that can be measured. Stop going by the female playbook, and stop using meaningless terms.

Quality is an important word in the real world.
Do you want a car that is made with high quality or low quality? How about a meal at a restaurant? Do you want a high quality laptop?
There are some people who misuse the phrase, but that doesn't actually change the correct meaning of the phrase.

Trade schools and military are the solution, but at some point it all comes back to parenting.
I’d be fine sending them to the military but you have to have your GED right?
My county has a school just for the worst kids.
The problem is if the kids aren’t in school they are going to be breaking the law and going to jail. School is basically a last ditch effort to help these kids not be in jail.
I highly doubt a trouble maker is going to want to all of a sudden work a trades job. As much as people on TD think there’s great money in trades, for an 18 year old drop out they wouldn’t be making Jack shite, working a crappy job, doing the worst tasks, and working the worst hours. I don’t see how that’s going to motivate them?

significant amount time, resources, and attention is paid to a relatively small number of high school students who don't know how to act, don't want to act right, and in all reality, don't want to be in school. They don't want to go to class, do homework, play sports, join the band, etc. They are only there because they are forced to be there, and while they are there, they are screwing up things for the vast majority of kids who DO want to be there.
1. Bring back corporal punishment
2. Problem kids who continue to act up get forcibly sent to military school. Board and feed them. Gloves off level of discipline. This is for 9th grade and up only. Most of these kids come from broken homes and this would give them the structure and discipline that just might save them from a life of going in and out of prison

9th grade is too late.

yep
don't have that nearly as much in the private schools, at least the good ones
also at the really big schools you dont see it in certain sport kids. i.e. baseball and softball have a lot less kids % wise getting in trouble over football and basketball.

As a society, we need to change our focus. We need to focus on the 90 percent of kids who WANT to be in school and want to be successful. Tell the 10 percent to shape up, or they can get out.
Ahhh the ole 94.6% of stats are made up on the spot/making up people to be mad at combo

Can't you just put all the behaviors problems in one room and keep them away from the students?

We need to change it up and realize that not everyone needs to go to college. You pretty much know by middle school who is cut out for college or not. If not, starting in middle school they diverge down the trade path, with classes focused on financial literacy and life skills into specialized trades by high school.
Careful the liberal college intelligentsia will not like you coming after their money train of low interest unforgivable government back loans for tuition to pay for gender studies degrees. Don’t you know a college degree is the key to success???
