Grappling and jujitsu don't require throwing people around. it is about leverage, restraint, pressure points, etc. Just watching to understand the concept of keeping an opponent close as defense will do wonders to protect yourself.

You are looking at it more from an attack standpoint. I'd focus on defense first.

Have you looked into Krav Maga?

It skips all the "You must be one with the two-ness" crap and focuses solely on self-defense

I'm no expert and know nothing of ju jitsu but the point of grappling is redistributing weight, and using the weight of your opponent against him.

I'm not saying books/video aren't useful tools. But you can't learn a self-defense technique solely by observation. You must practice it on someone.

The details matter. Space, pressure, angles can make all the difference. You may get the understanding of the concept from a video, but you only get mastery of the move from practice. And critically important with grappling is how to chain the moves together. When your triangle choke attempt fails how do you transition it into an arm bar or omoplota. What do you do if the guy attempts to lift you? What do you do when someone punches your face from the guard? It takes live sparring with instruction.

just want to be able to defend myself with my hands and feet if the need arises.
put a better weapon in your hands. weapons were invented bc hands are very limited. doesn't have to be a gun. get pepper spray, stun gun, taser, knife, etc. pepper spray is cheap and can be used several feet away.

stun gun is pretty cheap and even more effective but has to be used within arms reach

taser obviously works farther away.

A gun is obviously the best weapon of self defense but it also can create much bigger problems.

William Ewart Fairbairn. Look him up. He invented the Fairban-Sykes Fighting knife.

He wrote a book called Get Tough.

Former ShangHai police officer who developed a gutter style of fighting.

He taught self defense tactics to the Allied troops during WW2.

Learn his stuff. Go to Wikipedia then follow the video links to his movies.

You can learn technique and application by yourself. However it really only starts to work when going against somebody who is resisting. You have to “feel” it. It really is why bjj or judo is good. Cause you’re getting your arse kicked while trying to apply that technique. And the main thing real world practice will teach you is to freakin breathe. Sounds easy but it’s something you have to do to understand. You laugh but a 6 month old white belt in bjj is actually a dangerous bastard.

I think he could've probably taken Jean Claude IRL.

Him and Carl Weathers shouldve both made an Expendables appearance at some point.

Actually jujitsu and judo require kuzushi the art of off balancing an opponent, during the samurai days you learned tosses and throws

Any real place will teach it
