Is it possible to be self-taught in martial arts?

I'm not looking to go to the All-Valley Karate Championship, but just want to be able to defend myself with my hands and feet if the need arises. I can punch pretty good but it would be cool if I could add a roundhouse kick to my fighting options. Any YouTube videos or books that you suggest?

You can make your own martial art, man. With blackjack and hookers.

No. Getting good at self defense takes full speed drilling against another live body. That is why stuff like Judo and Brazillian Jiu Jitsu is so practical in the street and krav maga isn't. You can practice an arm bar or a rear naked choke with a partner. You cant practice a full speed eye gouge or groin strike.

You can be self taught in nuclear physics if you want. Whether you'd be any good at it is another question.

I think you could learn quite a bit of grappling or jujitsu from watching but I don't know about any type of striking or throwing.

Yes but you have to have an extremely high iq. I’ve never been in a fight but it’s only because I’m terrified of what I can do with the synthesis of muscle and mind and don’t want to hurt anyone or warp the space time continuum. But if you jocks keep bullying me it might send me over the edge!!

you'd still have to practice throwing the weight of another body, and being thrown yourself

Sure, the girl from Star Wars became the best Jedi ever in minutes.

You could do it by purchasing the right video series and equipment to work with etc. With a partner you could pull it off. I took martial arts for 12 yrs and I would advise you to find a good dojo and pay the monthly fee. You would be 100 times better trained.

Barney Fyfe tried it with Judo. It didn't go well.

How much would a good dojo run? Finances are tight now with child support and all.
