Suddenly you are disarmed from your weapon. Now what?

You can teach yourself how to properly strike. Boxing, kickboxing, etc. There is plenty of good Youtube content for that purpose. You can teach yourself quite a bit. BUT, applying it to a real life situation is a something else, and that’s where having a teacher is well worth the money. Also, throwing punches and kicks is not ideal. You can hurt yourself pretty easily, but knowing the basic movements of boxing, kickboxing is better than nothing at all.

The problem is you can't teach yourself to take a punch. And that part is rather key.

You’re right. It has its limitations, but it’s better than nothing at all if you can’t afford proper lessons.

Yes but they are pretty worthless, there is a whole genre of YouTube dedicated to martial arts "masters" vs real fighters.

It is funny as hell

In college me and my roommate invented a hybrid version of Bruce Lee and chuck Norris fighting styles for some music videos we were producing.

There was this one kid that tried to learn from books. He thought he was pretty good until he started some shite with a blond headed guy on a beach in California.

Books didn't work out for him

Thank you Kafka for bringing back this thread from two months ago. As luck would have it, the retirement community where I started working began offering an introductory self-defense class for residents and employees. I learned some valuable skills but unfortunately had to stop when I became seriously injured from slipping on some jello a resident had spilled in the dining hall. I look forward to continuing my fighting education when I’m 100%. In the meantime I’ve bought a tactical knife for protection.
