The quickest way to get your arse beat in a fight is to start throwing self-taught Karate kicks. The second quickest way is to throw dojo-learned karate kicks.

After my Mother packed us up and moved us to the Burbs, i was bullied, being the new guy. band of jock types, who were part of a dojo would take aim at me, because i was hitting on a chubby blonde, and they would get jealous.

Finally i fought back, dressed as a shower for Halloween, and each one of them tried to kick my arse. Luckily for me, a master karate fighter saved me and taught me the ways of Karate. For some reason, he would always have me do house work as part of the training.

So in the end, i joined a karate tourney, and actually won, after the karate teacher rubbed one out on my leg. I got the Chubby Blonde and to this day, think back to those days.

Space, pressure, angles can make all the difference. You may get the understanding of the concept from a video, but you only get mastery of the move from practice. And critically important with grappling is how to chain the moves together.

100% agree. You really can't learn jits solo. You need a good instructor to teach you and honestly training partners to roll with to have the instructor to form a basis for critique on the movements and transitions. You could possible wing it from a video if you had a decent training partner but there really is no substitute for hands on instruction in BJJ.

You could all day learn boxing solo until it comes time to get hit which is really the best way to learn boxing in the first place as you spar. What looks good shadowboxing against air might not be so good against a live human. I think Mike Tyson said it best, everyone has a plan until they get hit in the face.

Train in Jiu-Jitsu, boxing, Muay Thai/kickboxing, or general MMA. Everything else is fake crap

You can gain lots of knowledge, but it would be a lot like having lots of knowledge of how to drive a car, with no first hand experience.

You might be able to drive around town just fine, but if you try to enter a circuit race against people who are experienced, you're going to get destroyed.

Just watching to understand the concept of keeping an opponent close as defense will do wonders to protect yourself.
Trust me, it is completely useless if you don't drill and execute the techniques in live action over and over. There is no way in hell that you can become even kinda good at BJJ strictly by watching videos. All those concepts that you can learn mean nothing until you've seen how they apply, what the counters are, and most importantly, how to fricking remain calm when shite goes down.

Absolutely. You can be self-taught in anything.

Of course, some things are better self-taught than others. Self-taught masturbation? Fine. Self-taught nuclear plant operator? Let's slow down.

Ok. I'm going to look into a martial arts class. What do you wear to these classes? Running shorts and a t-shirt? I'm assuming that I'll be barefoot.

Not going to do you any good in a real fight. Low kicks to shin and knee are much more effective.

Somebody had to invent a martial art, right? So of course it's possible.

Where are you located? Typically shorts with no pockets work best.

Yes. You can learn kata/hyeong from videos on YouTube or DVD and get pretty good.

You can also practice on bags and dummies for power.

I'd stick with either Shotokan or Tae Kwon Do.

Kumite will further develop your skills but you can get pretty far learning the above on your own and can get in great shape. Don't forget to stretch.
