We have smart switches, outlets, and Alexa's through out our home.
Get home with a handful of groceries and a 5 yr old that is about to crap his pants - "Alexa We're home" boom turns on lights throughout the house.
Laying in bed nice and warm and realize you left the damn patio light on? "Alexa - Turn off the patio. Done.
Leaving the house - Alexa - Good-Bye. Everything in the house gets shut off. Easy.
Christmas trees, outside holiday decorations and lights - all on automated schedules and can be voice controlled. Don't have to do any digging behind trees or bushes to unplug stuff.
Are these things necessary? No. Are they useful and kind of fun to play with? Absolutely.
As far as Alexa and Google Home always listening - who cares your phone is doing it anyway.

Yup- if I don’t care about the one I carry on my person doing it, I’m only so stressed about my lights tracking me. May as well embrace the perks if I’m subject to the concern either way.

How do you know the dog didn't plan the mission? Do you have top level security clearance?
If we ever have a badass dog doing the doing the planning and elimination of terrorists do you think we would just announce it to the world? No that shite would be kept under wraps for. 20 years at least.

So now you've made the argument that our "smart" devices could very well be smarter than us, and they're just not telling us.

I have my Christmas tree lights hooked up to a smart plug. It’s so convenient to say “Alexa, tree off” Instead of bending down and unplugging like a heathen.

Some of these things are more useful and secure than others.
I have no problem with WiFi thermostat and/or lights, but frick anything with a microphone or camera.

Should I care that "they" know when my sitting room lamps turn on and off?

I have smart speakers in each room in the house and smart lightbulbs to all the lamps. It’s nice to be able to rock my child to sleep and read him a book then without getting having to get up and disturb him I’m able to turn the lights off with just a simple “hey google turn off light
Do you just sit with him in the dark until he wakes up? How is having to say something quieter than flipping a light switch?

no you asked about living animals. devices aren't smart. They are not eukaryotes. They don't have g-protein coupled receptors.

You do have a point there. They are alien but robots. Maybe the robots are taking over. I have seen Terminator and the Matrix. Typically Sci-fi movies foretell the future. Transformers are 35 years old or something like that

Most likely typed from your phone that has a microphone and camera...that you carry everywhere 24/7..including the shitter.

I don’t care. I can lay in my bed and turn up my thermostat.

Sure. That doesn't mean I'm going to go install more of them as permanent fixtures in my house. Proper operational security practice would dictate that I reduce the attack surface of my home, so I limit all network-connected microphone and camera hardware in my home to the one device that needs it, my smartphone. I can then focus most of my mitigation efforts into restricting the smartphone.
Not to mention that many of the vendors for "smart"/IOT devices do not bother to maintain security patches for their devices past the sales life, if they ever really honestly do at all, so a couple years down the line when an exploit is found and every single one of those particular devices is free reign on the internet, you're susceptible to attack. Suddenly mitigating all of these possible attack vectors and cost of replacing things that have become outdated and vulnerable in your home becomes a larger headache than just getting up and performing a menial task.
So I have only chosen to maintain network-connected smart devices for thermostat and hue color lights. The damage that can be done with those is low risk to me and are mitigated by backup non-smart lighting and built-in hardware limits on my HVAC equipment.

Mics without physical on/off switches in products concern me, but the 3rd party collection of Internet data, cookies, and location concern me even more especially since we don't always know or are customers of companies to hold them accountable. They could be leaked by individual employees or even sold to govt. We shouldn't have to opt out (and can't even do that always) and with location it's way to issue to figure out who people are. Home, work, home 5 times a week. Home, school, home 5 times a week they can figure out phone used by kid or teacher knowing if elementary, middle, or high school on top of anything else gathered. It's not hard for them to figure out who phone belongs to.

Bluetooth tracking has been a problem as well with devices informing companies what other devices are in range and being sold to Ad companies.
quote:
THE DATA REVIEWED BY TIMES OPINION didn’t come from a telecom or giant tech company, nor did it come from a governmental surveillance operation. It originated from a location data company, one of dozens quietly collecting precise movements using software slipped onto mobile phone apps. You’ve probably never heard of most of the companies — and yet to anyone who has access to this data, your life is an open book. They can see the places you go every moment of the day, whom you meet with or spend the night with, where you pray, whether you visit a methadone clinic, a psychiatrist’s office or a massage parlor...
Today, it’s perfectly legal to collect and sell all this information. In the United States, as in most of the world, no federal law limits what has become a vast and lucrative trade in human tracking. Only internal company policies and the decency of individual employees prevent those with access to the data from, say, stalking an estranged spouse or selling the evening commute of an intelligence officer to a hostile foreign power...
Closer to home, on a smaller yet no less troubling scale, there are often few protections to stop an individual analyst with access to such data from tracking an ex-lover or a victim of abuse...
THE COMPANIES THAT COLLECT all this information on your movements justify their business on the basis of three claims: People consent to be tracked, the data is anonymous and the data is secure.
None of those claims hold up, based on the file we’ve obtained and our review of company practices.
Yes, the location data contains billions of data points with no identifiable information like names or email addresses. But it’s child’s play to connect real names to the dots that appear on the maps...
