Take off, nuke the site from orbit. It's the only way to be sure.

After you clean them and get the stink out... get some of the Dr. Scholl's foot spray. It's an antiperspirant, deodorant, and has a light powder to it. Made a world of difference in my shoe stank by spraying my feet every morning before putting my shoes on.

Spray them with Ozium and then put a sneaker ball in it.

Vodka (the cheaper the better) in a spray bottle. Few hits of that kills the bacteria that causes the smell.
I know this because I know ballerinas. They smell horrible after a show and the costumes can't exactly be dry cleaned between performances. So they squirt vodka because it kills the smell and doesn't damage the costume. Pro tip: use the 2:1 ratio. As in, for every two squirts the shoe/costume gets you get one yourself.

Put a fabric softener (one of those sheets) in there or put some baking soda in a ziplock bag and leave the back open. Or both.
One day do the baking soda then the next day and over night put the fabric softener.

Once you get them clean, invest in some of these- they work well

There are dead skin cells, fungi and bacteria that are embedded deep into the fabric of those soles. You could get it out eventually but is it worth the time when you could just buy a new pair of shoes?

Microwave on high for 3 1/2 hours. I guarantee they will not smell like feet afterward.

Ozone generator will remove a dead body smell.

Never tried Ozium on shoes but it did wonders to get rid of the weed smell in my truck after we’d go hotboxing in high school

I’m guessing that you’re wearing the shoes without socks. I did that with a pair of K-Swiss tennis shoes when I was in high school, and it got to the point that I couldn’t even bring them in the house. Eventually, if you went outside under the carport where I would leave them, you could still smell them. I tried a lot of different things, but nothing worked. Strange, because I’ve never had a problem with foot odor before or after that.

this works, I'd put them in a zip lock bags, and leave them in the freezer for a week

Household freezers don’t kill bacteria. It’s an urban legend. It would have to reach 80 below zero to kill all bacteria.

Yeah dude. It still works in adulthood. And I love the smell. Reminds me of simpler times
