I only ever turn it off if I'm going inside the store.
Otherwise never..

Put it this way. If there's enough fumes in the air to ignite from a cell phone or a cigarette being smoked, the very second somebody starts their engine after they finish pumping gas, everybody is going up in flames.

always turn it off, so old people like me won't have to listen to your punk-arse rap music. #getoffmylawn

I appreciate other people turning off their vehicles while pumping so I don't have to inhale so much exhaust.

It's one of those near meaningless safety precautions. You're more likely to cause a fire by getting into and back out of your car when while the gas is pumping. Particularly on cold, dry, windy days when static discharges are more likely.
BTW, the fear about cell phones or even cigarettes is pretty much a non issue as well unless your lighting the cigarette or maybe own a note 7.

Be sure to hose down your model buddies in gasoline then drop a lit smoke.

Cigarettes don't burn hot enough to ignite gasoline fumes and there has never been a documented case of a cell phone igniting gasoline fumes.

system is a vacum system and just like when the cap is loose, it could cause the check engine light to come on.

I never turn my car off when pumping gas. i'm still alive.

A cell phone can not ignite gas fumes, Myth Busters proved it.

I just about always fill mine up with it running.

I leave my truck running. Never had any issues
Let's face it, no one that has had an issue is going to be alive to tell about it.
Why even take the risk no matter how small?

Use a ronson lighter. Make sparks.

Why would you want to leave it running?
Posted on 11/17/16 at 10:36 am to Hawgnsincebirth55
can create static, static shock can ignite fuel vapors, the only time it's acceptable to leave the car running is if you have a hooptie and you are unsure if it will start again so you leave it running while you pump your $5 in gas.

I leave my truck running every time I pump gas.

I also use a shotgun shell as a stopper for pumps without them. Living on the edge

I've been driving for over 20 years and I have never turned my car off to pump gas.
