It's one of those near meaningless safety precautions. You're more likely to cause a fire by getting into and back out of your car when while the gas is pumping. Particularly on cold, dry, windy days when static discharges are more likely.

BTW, the fear about cell phones or even cigarettes is pretty much a non issue as well unless your lighting the cigarette or maybe own a note 7.

Cigarettes don't burn hot enough to ignite gasoline fumes and there has never been a documented case of a cell phone igniting gasoline fumes.

I never turn my car off when pumping gas. i'm still alive.

A cell phone can not ignite gas fumes, Myth Busters proved it.

I leave my truck running every time I pump gas.

I also use a shotgun shell as a stopper for pumps without them. Living on the edge
