Are the kids upset about the performance?

If the answer is yes, then I’d tread lightly and build off that in practice.

If the answer is no, I’d make them run the Puke until they make Jackie Moon puke.

It sounds like you didn’t prepare them well enough. This is on you.

I would say make them run sprints during practice, wear them out, then have them go shoot free throws. This will simulate tired legs and arms and concentration under duress.

You have absolutely no business being a coach. You should quit and find someone else to take your place. I’ve coached all levels in many different sports and your thinking is wrong on so many levels. At the very least, read a few good books on how to work with kids and athletes. Do you really think they tried to miss free throws on purpose?

3 weeks into the season and my team has won more games already than they did all of last year. Our only losses have been by 4 and 6 after only winning 2 games all last year. I think I'm doing ok in the coaching department

I was a sophomore in 93, that's the year the winning steak started.

Smart move coach. You would not want to make them waste time by practicing free throws. Make them run for missing free throws instead. You are a championship coach for sure.

Goddamn your reading comprehension skills are at a borderline retarded level considering that directly underneath the part of the OP you quoted I stated we are going to run for every free throw we miss in practice and that is what we will do all practice. Either making free throws or running. Yes i understand they have to work on free throws to get better.

Eta: if they miss a free throw in practice I think I'm gonna make them run a suicide for every miss.

I would blame the coach for not properly teaching the art of free throws. You should run for every miss.

How many more generations will it take for you people to walk on your hind legs?

If you think your coaching ability at a junior high level is dependent on your win/loss record, then you have even more problems than I thought.

Your writing skills must suck. The title of the post says "is it acceptable for me to punish junior high (7-9) grade kids for a loss?

Most of the posters are responding to your own insanity.

I hope you are also not a junior high teacher, because I am giving you an F for your writing skills

Nice edit dipshit. Perhaps your language skills are Arkansas hillbilly white trash level that you failed to convey what you are attempt to say. No worries, I'll break it down for you and show you your mistake.

The subject of this part of your run on sentence is about running. So when you use a word choice like "that" it circles back to the subject of the sentence, which I'm this case was running. Read a book.

So this seems to be about you and bragging at the water cooler at work. Congrats on being THAT coach.

ETA: I coached high level AAU for 16U and 17U kids for many years. Competitive level basketball in those age groups is about winning and losing because winning gets you higher seeds in future tournaments and gives the kids exposure to more college coaches. You're teaching developmental basketball. Your job is to better their games. If you want to run them then incorporate the running into learning. Have them do full counrt layups. Right handed left handed, reverse right hand, reverse left hand, right handed Euro step, left handed Euro step.

Full court three man passing drills. Free throws with consequences. Drills with winners and losers and losers run.

Teach them the game. When a kid tried out for my team I expected them to come to me with a certain skillset. My job was to teach them the game, the execution and to get them the best exposure I could possibly provide to college coaches during the April and July open periods.

Your job is to help them develop that skillset whether they just want to make the high school team or to play at a higher competitive level.

I’m willing to bet you were that douchebag that was constantly bullied in high school and now you’re back with a vengeance because you’re too stupid to do anything else but coach.

A few years ago I got roped into coaching my nephew’s 3rd grade basketball team. I’m not really a basketball coach, but I did play in HS and I did it because nobody else would, and my nephew wanted to play hoops and I love the kid.

I tried to keep it light and easy and fun because let’s face it - in 3rd grade, most of these kids are still learning to dribble.

Some of these guys on the other bench, however...we’re talking the 3 piece suit wearing, clipboard carrying, barking at the kids types. I can think of at least 3 of these jokers who clearly seemed to think they were Roy Williams.

OP gives me that impression.

Just saw on TV that Tua’s dad took a belt to him for throwing interceptions or losing a game. Punish away....

And now he plays for Saban.

The floggings will continue until morale improves.

That’s a good quote for the OP’s tombstone.
