Anything that has Seattle as good in the top 100 is a load of crap. Gridlock is insane, drugs and homelessness is everywhere, cost of living in Seattle is still bonkers for even someone with no debt and making 100K a year, housing is beyond unaffordable, and the local government is beyond inept.

Boulder, CO and Ithaca, NY are high on my list.

I heard Seattle has the highest suicide rates. Something to do with 300 days out of the year being cloudy and dark.
quote:LINK
Seattle has regrettably suffered the title "Suicide City USA" for a long time, presumably because of the weather. Rainy weather equals higher suicide rates – perfectly logical! But the truth is Seattle doesn't even make the top 10 list. According to a study published in the journal Social Science and Medicine, Las Vegas is the true suicide capital of the US, followed by Colorado Springs, Tuscon and a list of other cities that don't include Seattle. Among states, Alaska tops the list.
And it isn't cloudy and dark 300 days out of the year.

My daughter and her husband (one or both) have lived in Metairie, Louisville, Nashville, San Diego, Quito, Madrid, Yokohama, Charleston SC, and Seattle. They say Seattle is the best place they’ve lived. All I can tell you is that those things you point out are either mostly invisible or they are ubiquitous, eg Baton Rouge has gridlock and shitty government.

There’s charm and culture to NO and Austin. When I think of them both,
Austin doesn't have a whole lot of "culture" anymore. The entire city as we know it was built up in the last 15 years. It's a fun place, safe, with a lot to do (so I always get a kick out of some clown in Eunice saying it's a liberal shithole). But the "culture" ( as it is today at least) is entirely manufactured.

Austin doesn't have inherent "culture".

you're right, it would be more accurate to say that almost all trappings of original austin have long since been demolished to make way for more instagram friendly restaurants, bars, and condos. Hard to have "culture" when the number of businesses that were there ten years ago is dwindling every day.

6th street as lame as it may be now, has been a model for what other college towns try to emulate.
in most States not LA. a college town is largely educated and a great place for entrepreneurship
Austin has been known as an independent music town for far more that 20 years plus th BBQ scene that has since expoded in Texas started in Austin to serve the State capitol, lobby money
to say thats not a "culture" is just dumb ,,
