Sorry. My question was way too insensitive, especially for people with these issues, but I just don’t get it sometimes.

It’s triggered by external factors, but it’s a mental thing.

If you don’t feel like you have much control over things that happen to you, and you give a shite about your life, you might have anxiety. Shrinks call that “external locus of control”.

Actually, that depends. Some vitamin deficiencies can mimic anxiety symptoms. Perimenopause for women, low Vitamin D, low B12, low Magnesium, anemia, etc.

I always recommend folks get a good work up with the GP to make sure there isn’t a physiological cause.

It’s definitely real.

The confounding thing for me is that I feel like I should have nothing to be anxious about. I’m healthy, I have a good career where money isn’t a major stress point.

Yet on occasion I can feel the anxiety coursing through my body. It’s frustrating, which of course makes it worse.

It’s not debilitating for me, but it’s there.

Fear of impending doom is real, but it’s definitely in the head.

Like what causes it?
It's probably a product of evolution, a self-preservation instinct. The modern world gives us too many inputs and some people go into overdrive with it.

That's my totally unqualified opinion.

In my experience, real anxiety issues aren't difficult to differentiate between the trendy type we hear about on social media and whatnot.

And why does it seem like every girl has this issue?

I'm a dude and I have it sometimes. It's not serious, and it doesn't control me or paralyze me. But I do have anxiety in some particular situations.

I never actually shared this with anyone...but I have a good example of one of these situations: I got laid off in 2009 during the recession despite excellent performance. My company at the time went bankrupt and laid off almost everyone.

So now I have a complex - I have this constant fear that I'm going to get the axe every time my company hits a road bump. It's not entirely rational and I recognize it. You can bet that right now I'm feeling it every time I hear that one of my colleagues got laid off. It's not smothering me, but it's a weight that I feel a lot the past couple of months.

This. It's hard to explain.

Marijuana helps though. I have gummies that I use every now and then. It's like a vacation from it when it hits.

The answer to this is not an either / or question. The answer is yes to both.

I started having panic attacks in my thirties while I was driving. You haven't lived until you have a panic attack going over the Dames Point bridge in Jacksonville. It came out of nowhere and I thought I was going to black out as I crested the top. I thought it was all ridiculous, too, until I started having them.

I’ve found once you remove the brain people are much less anxious. So I guess you could say it’s all in the head.

I don't have panic attacks, but definitely have anxiety. I say its real. I haven't always had anxiety, it started after college.
