Yes and no. Under normal circumstances, you don't go to Angola unless you have 20+ year sentence. BUT, there are a lot of special programs that are only offered on the state level and some specific to Angola. So, say they offer welding program and you're lucky enough to get into the program, basically through knowing someone with pull or the luck of a lottery-type system, you could be shipped to Angola to participate in the program, even if your sentence is only 5 years or so.
THe thing is that the if you are the worst of the worst, ANgola is where you're going to go. Derrick Todd Lee, straight to Angola.
So basically, they have the only Death Row so they get all the hardened criminals, but you don't have to necessarily be a hardened murderer to end up there.
I personally know a guy that killed a bunch of people in a DWI (I think it was his 3rd) and he's currently in Angola. From talking with his brother, he finds it preferable because he gets to work with the horses and livestock, which he'd much rather over sitting in a overcrowded dorm full of inmates all day.

Would love to see those Angola Guards on horseback scatter protesters while the tower guards stood watch with their rifles.Ever seen the countryside around the prison, swamp & rattlesnake filled terrain everywhere. Some protesters mite never be found. Can't see the rodeo ever ending as it is a major money maker for the prison.And the Cain family but that's another story.

ETA - if so, we definitely know each other. His older sister was married to a dear friend of mine (MS) right out of HS. If you know him, you know me.

Dont forget those Tunica Hills! My dad worked at Angola for many years, in fact he DIED there, had a heart attack at work. But he used to be on the "chase team". When a convict broke out, dad and a team went after them with dogs etc. Most times if they were not found by nightfall they would cease the chase and start back early in the morning. When they would finally catch up to the escapee, they would be begging to go back because they had been through so much hell through the night, falling over 30 foot drops, eaten up by mosquitoes. Tired, scratched up from briars etc.

I honestly don't remember him having an older sister. I'm friends with his older brother, but not close enough where I know all the siblings and stuff.
I just talked to the brother a few months after the sentencing to confirm that it was his younger brother. Without Facebook, I probably would have never talked to J again due to just losing touch over time.

We have too many connections to not know each other. I've known our mutual friend MB since I was about 4. The other guy I was talking about is MS.
I think you are a couple years older than me though. MB was like 16 when I was 14 or so.

I made several trips to the rodeo,a friend of mine would haul the bucking horses and I would ride along as company.I would talk to some of the trusties,they seemed to be mostly pretty decent guys that just went down the wrong road in life.
Pretty nice artwork,wood carvings,etc. for sale.w

I heard him singing ‘6 months ain’t no sentence.’ He said ‘One year, was not no time.’ Said he had friends, still in Angola. Serving from 14 to 99.
