The is a pretty fascinating documentary on HBO called the Anarchists where a bunch of ex pats tried set up shop there a few years ago and run an annual conference called Anarchapulco. In the long run it .....it didnt go well.

The cartels have absolutely ruined a lot in Mexico. They’re even infiltrating the avocado market.
But it has some awesome places, history and culture. In the 70s and 80s you could drive to almost anywhere down there and feel safer than many parts of the US. That’s long gone now, sadly.
Have some in laws in Mexico City. They live a very familiar life. Office jobs, upper middle class, nice houses. Kids play soccer. That life exists a lot more than we think, since all we see is negative news.

Crime vs Homicide. It just means in the list you have that you will get robbed and/or raped or assaulted. In the list you are responding to they will just kill you and then rob you and then leave your body in a compromising position to warn others, because tourists means government protection and enforcement which the cartel doesn't like because it slows them down and cost them bribe money.

The wiki homicide list is from 2022. New Orleans had the fourth highest murder rate in the US last year.

Acapulco had the highest murder rate in the world a few years ago if I'm not mistaken. It's gone.

Hasn’t been the same since the Hulkster left town.
I’m surprised the Mexican government hasn’t gotten control of that area since it’s such a big part of its tourism economy.

I would think that these days, Americans would stick out like a sore thumb in Acapulco and Zihuatenejo. I would like to go back, but no, not happening given the current situation.
When we were there, they were having elections. There were soldiers stationed around Zihuatenejo, but they were pretty sad looking. Little guys in too big uniforms, looking bored, but with M-16s. They don't sell alcohol on election day, but in one bodega in the center of town a soldier was standing next to a store that had a hand-lettered sign that said in English: "No alcohol sold today, except discreetly."
I went in and bought a 6-pack of Corona. Viva Mexico.

Every gameshow in the 70's gave away a trip to "Fabulous Acapulco". Now, you never hear of anyone going there for vacation.
Has the cartel taken it over by now?
Still chock bock full of Canadians and Europeans, mainly Brits. Also HUGELY popular with Mexican Nationals on Vacation. Sizeable ex pat communities in the area as well. There is some violence but there is violence in rural Mississippi.
My wife and I passed through Acapulco 6 years ago and it is still very nice but it is aged.

This. It was already on a downward spiral with the cartels and crime but that hurricane was pretty much game over.

Acapulco and Puerta Vallarta have gone to shite
Puerto Vallarta is awesome. Go there regularly. I feel safer walking around that city at night than I do most American cities. Hiked the jungle there last time to some deserted beaches, and was way more worried about jaguars than cartel violence.

I went to Acapulco about 10 years ago. I mostly stayed at the resort but the couple times I did venture out, it wasn’t too bad. I will tell you that the resort people were none too happy every time we left. “It is dangerous amigo! You should not leave without an escort!”
It’s ok buddy. I live in Baton Rouge and have spent a lot of time in New Orleans. I have experience in actively avoiding being murdered.

Las Brisas, just around the south point of Acapulco Bay, is a wonderful old school resort. Did 10th anniversary there back in '91.
Sigh

They literally run the entire country, so yes.
Why anyone would visit that country right now is beyond me.

not even close to the same
but to answer OPs question....yea Cartels. because of the cartels

international flyers coming to Acapulco decreased from 355,760 flyers registered in 2006 to 52,684 flyers in the year 2015,
gotten even worse not. prolly less than 30k a year visit
and the pacific ocean doesnt have the really pretty beaches the gulf side does for the most part, exception would be Zihuatanejo. If you are going to go to the pacific side, better to go to Cabo
