Absolutely not. Doing pretty much all of it on my own only affirmed my position.

I’d rather go to ULL or Tech than live at home and go to LSU

Not a responsibility but who the hell wouldn’t if they can? The more you help your kids when they’re young, the less you have to when they’re old and you’re old. Helping my kids to be in a place where they can be happy- including but not limited to being financially independent- is what I see as my primary role as a parent.

People who say, “My parents didn’t help me so I’m not helping mine,” at face value that sounds like a selfish statement. Don’t give me all the “It’ll make them work harder” bullshite. HELP YOUR DAM KIDS.

I think so, but I graduated from college 20 years ago and still collect a monthly allowance from the parents.

My boomer parents didn't and were quite proud of that. Neither of them valued education. I went in the army and then trade school. At 42 I already make more than they ever made in their lifetime.

Face it, even dual-income families blow every penny they make and have to finance $900 refrigerators. They are unwilling to save for their child's education. It's a fact of life.

While mommy and daddy are living the high life, Suzy and Johnny must face up to the fact that they either have to go it alone and take out student loans, or work at McDonald's.

My parents didn’t pay for my college. We were poor, so it wasn’t really ever expected. I took loans out at a time when college was much cheaper, so the loans didn’t really weigh me down post-graduation.

My son is 7 and i have a START account in his name. I’m building it up as much as I can, for as long as I can. I see how expensive college has gotten now and I can’t see how it’s going to get better in the next 10 years, only worse.

I want to do something for my kid that my parents couldn’t do for me or my siblings.

But I don’t feel obligated to do so.

My parents paid for mine, so I'm paying for my kids.
But, damn, tuition was about $2000/ year when I went, now it's $12,000.

More like $1900 refrigerators.
Not to mention $50k SUVs, Disney vacations, Boats, side by side 4wheelers, and travel ball.

The children of wealthier families are on average more successful than children that come from poorer families. This is because giving more support will, on average, enable your children to be more successful. If a college age person is able to concentrate more on academics and internships that build marketable skills rather than waiting tables then they will come out ahead. Refusing to offer support when you are able just shows to me that you don't care about your children's well being.

Sure, there are some problem children and young adults that need a kick in the arse, but that shouldn't be the default starting place.

I paid for my college by working nights loading trucks in a warehouse. My parents couldn't afford and I didn't expect them to pay for it.

I paid for my daughter's school as long as she maintained a GPA we both agreed on. When that slid down (due to sorority and other outside influences) she worked and got loans for the balance which was about 1-1/2 years worth.

I don't feel guilty one bit about her having to pay those loans back. It was her choice to put other things in front of her grades.

Parents covered what was left after my golf scholarship. That was all based on the premise that I was going to obtain a scholarship of some level. This was discussed prior to going to school, what degree I was going to get, and what academic requirements I needed to maintain to continue being "financed" by them.
I graduated in 4.5 years due to golf taking a lot of time away from the class room.

I am a statistical outlier because I co-owned a business prior to going to college and had enough equity to pay for a full ride to any private school in the nation. Also my parents have high qualified degrees and credentials.

No parents don't have to but any good parent should want to help out their kids as much as possible. My parents paid for mine so i plan on paying for my kids when the time comes.
