Yeah cause there’s nothing like having a conversation with a high school dropout.

I went into the Army and had GI Bill. Came out of LSU debt free. However, deployed twice to the Ghan, which put college on hold for 36 months.

Lotta thinly veiled jealousy

You keep saying this. Why?

I can afford to send all three of my kids to college. I have enough experience both as a parent and as an employer to realize it's not a good idea for the majority of kids.

Are you jealous of the people that have the balls and patience to make their kids earn it?

I have put my boys in a spot with opportunities that an extreme few number of kids will have. They have to make it happen though. They have to develop and go for it if they so choose.

My wife keeps talking about college tuition for our kids. I don’t want to save for their tuition. I want to save for my retirement. I’m fine with a little 529 account for people to contribute in lieu of Xmas presents etc but otherwise, the kids can take out loans.

I save for tuition. With my diet and BMI retirement probably isn’t in the cards. Hell, college even is 50/50 what with their grades but that still seems more likely.

As a parent that is currently helping his son through college as an engineering student at UF, I see it as a combined effort. He has paid his fair share to no
Use a full academic scholarship. We have provided a condo, late model car and spending money. We saved for 18 long years for his education. We were able to buy a condo because of his scholarship. It actually will save us a lot more f money in the long run.

No. I didnt want to owe my old man anything. The interest would have been worse than a loan shark.

If you're not on the level of a full ride, join the Guard, I didnt pay a dime for college , and I worked as a part time CFI, but I did sacrifice a semester for Tech School.

All of mine have used every means possible for merit based aid, tops, other scholarships etc...and I pay the rest regardless of what that is for undergrad. I don’t want my children saddled with student loan debt but they know their end of the bargain means basically for them a STEM degree. Continuing education beyond undergrad is on a case by case basis. One case yes....one case well we’ll see.

I paid for school, housing, food, phone and vehicle. Just about everything but his party money which he worked for during the summer.

I'm 25 and dont have any kids myself but it seems like a lot of commercials/TV shows/movies insinuate that its a parent's basic responsibility to send their kids to college, same as feeding them and putting a roof over their head.

Roof and feeding, yes.

Your job is to get a's so you can get scholarships. Not frick around, fail classes, and hope mommy and daddy can pay for your tuition.

Now if they can and want to, by all means. But not all families have that capability

NO!

But if you want to give them a jumpstart in life, and solid evidence that you truly wish the best for them, then its a solid sacrifice on your part

We told our kids 4 years and a bachelors and we would do everything we could to help them with no debt. One went over 4 years and the other is a dumbass.

No.

My parents helped as much as they could my first year, then I was on my own. Having had the experience of working my way through college forced me to become a responsible adult. I took some lumps and learned on my way.

With that said, I will make sure my two children have what they need to get an education after high school. But, they wont know that. They will be expected to go for any and all scholarships available. They will work while they go to school (I'm paying for the classes, not the party). They will have the option to work toward any program they wish. If passing grades aren't there, the money gets cut off.
