Charlotte had the nation's first mint. Lost in the civil war.

I lived in a half dozen mid sized/large cities - including Pittsburgh, Baton Rouge, Memphis, and Houston.

When it comes to violent crime, Chicago is far safer than all of them.

I’d have never know that by the media reports - often from outlets largely based in rival cities like New York or Los Angeles.

It’s also drop dead gorgeous.

I think that if we could put politics and weather aside, most of the posters from the southern US would probably appreciate and enjoy Chicago.

I lived in King of Prussia, PA for 2 years.

They have the largest Mall in America as far a retail space.

It was the home of the Philadelphia Freedom's tennis team (Think Elton John)

And now its way over developed and sad to see :( ?

Knoxville is home of the original body farm. It's 2.5 acres of land. They have about 100 corpses spread around and study how they decay.

quote:

The original body farm is the University of Tennessee Anthropological Research Facility located a few miles from downtown on Alcoa Highway in Tennessee, behind the University of Tennessee Medical Center. It was first started in late 1981 by anthropologist Dr. William M. Bass as a facility for the study of the decomposition of human remains. Dr. Bass became head of the university's anthropology department in 1971, and as official state forensic anthropologist for Tennessee he was frequently consulted in police cases involving decomposed human remains.

I lived in a Levittown development. My grandparent's (RIP) home on the St Lawrence has a 17th century graveyard with tombstones behind it. When I lived in Guam a Japanese soldier surrendered. When I lived in Boulder I knew all the Jon Benet principles. In Baton Rouge I was once beat up at an all you can eat buffet by a gargantuan man named Gravy for taking the last chicken wing. I made up the last one. That's all I got.

Traverse City Michigan.

We get the Blue Angels every other year for the near/on July 4th Airshow.
Those off years? Typically the Thunderbirds.

Also associated with the airshow is the yearly Cherry Festival around the 4th. (The region is one of the largest cherry producers in the country). The kicker? Cherries aren’t usually ready to be picked around there until the end of the month.

And they were one!

Oprah Winfrey was born in Kosciusko, MS in 1954. I lived there from 1969-1974. During the time I lived there, my brother and his high school friends rented a house in the country from a Winfrey lady. They used it as a party house and a place to take girls. One night it burned to the ground. When you visit Kosciusko, you can visit Oprah's birthplace, but there's no house now.

Des Moines has a system of "skywalks" that connect most every building downtown so you don't have to go outside in winter.

When Dan Gilbert bought the Cavs and built a casino in downtown Cleveland, he had similar skywalks put in connecting Quicken Loans Arena to the Horseshoe Casino and at least one parking garage.

ETA: I live in Jax now. Most people know this, but it is the largest city in the lower 48. Several cities in Alaska are bigger.

Stayed at the Ambassador East, just like Cary Grant in North by Nortwest, in the 80's. Ate at The Pump Room, ate at two different pizza joints, had snails in a French restaurant near the hotel, met a girl at another hotel bar, went to Mike Ditka's club, and went through the Field Museum of Natural History. It was a great time and worked a convention over the weekend. My first job after graduating college took me there.

I love Pittsburgh. That is a grossly underrated, very fun city. It is a great beer city and the food is good too.

Chicago in the summer might be the nicest place in America, as long as you stay North Side or Near North Side.

I love Chicago from May-September. The rest of the year? Not so much.

Louisiana sucks balls from May-September most years, though.

Wish we had that for the heat in the south.

The downtowns in Houston and Dallas both have tunnel systems that connect several buildings together (with a few skywalks thrown in) just for that reason.
