Inner city schools in the movies... are any really that bad?

Watch just about any movie where they show a high school on the wrong side of the tracks they look like abandoned buildings. They all have graffiti covering the exterior (that looks to have been there for some time), floors littered with trash, students cursing teachers with impunity, and a staff that genuinely doesn't give a shite.
Watch 187, Dangerous Minds, Lean on Me, and the one with calculus students. They all look like absolute shite holes (and oddly they usually have an attractive single white female teacher - wtf is up with that?). I've seen some rundown schools, but never anything that bad.
Do schools that bad really exist?

Yes. And who cares about graffiti when cops are spraying mace on everyone to break up fights? That's why so many teachers quit or don't last. Out of control kids run the school.

My dad taught high school English on the south side of Chicago for 20 years. It's pretty much true.

My first teaching job was at an inner city school. I liked it. Really felt like I was helping.
You have a few in every class that are unreachable, but most I had weren't bad kids.

I taught Biology and Physical Science at Scotlandville Magnet for 3 years 2002-2005 and yes the student behavior is as bad as depicted in movies. The physical building wasn't as bad but I had numerous male students tell me that they would be dead or in jail by 21. It was just accepted.
I had some very good students who were determined to escape the "hood" but they were the exception. I left after we had 140 students come in after Katrina from the lower 9th ward. By the spring of 2006 we had 2 stabbings and 3 guns on campus. The last gun was a student in the hall waiting to shoot a rival gang member. This was the final straw for me, I left Baton Rouge that summer and moved to Lafourche Parish. No regrets on that front at all.

I can confirm that teaching in BR is more of a jailer job than a teaching job.

I taught at a public high school in New Orleans for several years. What you described is fairly accurate.
The one thing those movies get wrong is the number of kids actually at school. Daily attendance at my school hovered around 50%. Of those kids, I'd say only 75% attended class. Lots of students roaming the halls.
Also, the kids that actually turned out to be bad people were usually pretty well behaved and even respectful in class. I can't tell you how many times I've read about a current or former student being convicted of robbery, murder, etc.. and been truly shocked. The ones making life hell in the school were usually just a-hole teenagers operating in an environment with zero structure and accountability.

A lot of schools are really really bad but what you see in those movies are exaggerations. There are no schools with that much trash on the floor, much less cages to keep the students in or out. There is, however, drug dealing in high schools and middle schools. Weapons too. But the physical depictions are Hollywood exaggerations.
