The public schools in Jackson are probably worse than what Hollywood depicts. We have schools here where the bathrooms are without plumbing, the students literally come and go as they please, guns, drugs. It's insane. I feel bad for a lot of the kids because the environment is not conducive for learning.

You should really talk to teachers who have worked at Capitol, Istrouma, and Tara high schools. Hollywood has a pretty accurate depiction

Some of it is embellished or romanticized. But there is a lot of truth to the stories too (especially in a movie like Stand and Deliver).

I was in a PLA middle school for 8 years and lost 2 kids to suicide (both had serious mental health issues), 2 brothers to gang violence (murdered for witnessing another murder), and 3 to drug deals gone wrong. At one point, the school I worked in had 35 students who were legitimately homeless. But all the district is concerned about is standardized test scores and "college readiness".

I asked myself this question when I watched The Wire

Frankly, they're worse. I've taught in several similar school environments. All that Hollywood drivel revolves around a sort of "redemption factor" in which even the most at-risk student can be reached. However, the reality is that even the accessible students at such high schools are VASTLY behind the curve academically. Never mind the fact that you are first and foremost a policeman, then a teacher.
