Saw this first hand when he took office. I was contacted by the head of the state licensing board in my career field who told me a guy was retiring and he wanted me to take the seat. I was flattered and said sure. Didn't find out until later it is actually a paying gig. So the Board Commissioner sends my name up with concurrence of the other board members and I file my application with the state. A few weeks goes by and he is told the Governor has appointed some lady (turns out married to a big campaign donor) who doesn't even work or is licensed in our field. I was amazed but not surprised.

Never did the hotshot stuff. I don't want to live out west, don't want to be a fireman, don't have the time, and don't have the patience to wait to get on a crew

The older you get, the more you realize there's not a damn thing you can do about this kind of stuff because the corruption is at every level. It's sad.

No. I was asked to be on the LICENSING BOARD because of my expertise. Not because I know anyone. The person the Gov put on there doesn't know shite about what we do. She just rubber stamps the rest of the Board's decisions and collects a check.

If you were making 500K a year with an 8th grade education you'd keep in the family too.

Only a select few allowed in to the clique based on blood ties can navigate the River without as much as a high school degree.

Fixed. It's a cartel.

No ship hit that dock. No river pilot was on the boat that did, which isn't even actually shown in your photo.

My god, look at these 3 jamokes. If you cast these 3 "impartial" board members in a movie they would tell you no one would believe they would all look like this.

Must be lotsa lobbying fattening up those "independent" board members.

On a related note, I see Heitmeier has come full circle. As a legislator he received beaucoup bucks from boat pilots.

Then his son is miraculously selected to be a captain (along with Alario's kid).

Now the son's boat group pays Heitmeier to lobby on behalf of the pilots.

LA - the gift keeps on giving!

quote:

Kevin Alario and Cory Heitmeier were relatively young and inexperienced, but those disadvantages were outweighed by their potential to add to the group's political clout in Baton Rouge, according to some of the pilots, who elect their own apprentices.

Alario is the son of state Rep. John Alario, D-Westwego, former speaker of the House, and Heitmeier is the son of state Sen. Francis Heitmeier, D-Algiers, a floor leader for Gov. Foster and chairman of a committee that handles pilot bills.

NOBRA President Joe Clayton said both Alario and Heitmeier "were our friends for many years, and for the most part they agreed with us." He said the legislators' influence in Baton Rouge definitely played a role in the election of their sons to the association, but he said their fathers didn't do any unusual lobbying.

Typical LA politics. Part of me wants all the ships to head to Mobile and Houston so that the trade dries up here and the pilots are up shits creek.
