So basically double the pay? For a lot easier job too right? I mean they sleep in their own bed most nights? Where as the long haul captains are doing 3 weeks on/ 3 week off type of assignments?
I'm not saying it's an easy job, but don't they have rugs for any of the remotely difficult parts? It's not like these guys are flying star fighters through the Death Star, I know they have a lot on the line but they build in a lot of fail safes too.

So, these guys decide who gets the jobs, they recommend themselves to run their commission, they set their own wages and expenses, and when anyone tries to audit them, they tell them to go frick themselves? That’s a fine racket. How is this shite even possible?

I thought it steered like a regular boat (but front rudder goes in direction, and rear pivots). Turns out I was wrong, and ran that fricking thing into the bank of the Whiskey Bay Pilot Channel. It started spinning the wrong way, so I hammered down, and that just made it get all turned around faster.
The entire time, the pilot was screaming at me from on top of a 5gal bucket while taking a shite

Some people make backing a boat trailer down a ramp seem like it would be rocket science too. But a little practice goes a long way.
Just pretty laughable this is a career that pays similar to an Orthapaedic Surgeon. Not sure it takes surgical precision to drive a boat.

The pilots are govt crony scam.
I know locally the guys that know the area the best are not thrilled that they have to have a pilot on board for some routes who make far more than the Captain.

I normally have nerves of steel, but when that fricker started spinning away from the boat, and the boat kept going the wrong way, I was sweating it a little bit

Eta: The guy was a budget pilot that had been fired from his company.
Our conversation before his dump was literally, "I gotta shite. You know how to drive this?". I told him I guess I could figure it out, but I have no idea right now. Then, he said, "This is the rudder. This is the throttle. Don't wreck it". Told me nothing about the boat having two rudders

Of course the Chemical Industry did not forward a short list of candidates to the governor, either through formal or informal channels.....they would NEVER do that.
People, don't be so silly. Pilots are looking out for their best interest and CERTAINLY the chemical industry is looking out for their. To be believe anything else is stupid.
Chemical industry has more cash to influence its side. Anyone ever compare the number of lobbyist each side has and their respective budgets? Don't think for one second that both sides use the press to influence their sides of the story. Funny how people react to what is written or report without thinking it all through.

Nope. IIRC, he lost his for being drunk or something. Was a pilot in Memphis, I think, but got fired.
He actually drove that thing through an extremely tight bayou after that. We were rubbing bottom most of the time, and hitting trees on the side at every turn. Even side-swiped a floating camp. His justification was that he didn't want to be on the boat all day, and the long way took a few extra hours
