Wound nicely inside a spending bill to avoid a government shutdown is a provision that will raise the minimum age for buying tobacco to 21 years old. House passed it two days ago and the Senate just passed it today.

Bill is expected to be signed by Trump by Friday in order to avoid a shutdown.

Is this like the alcohol thing where they basically force the states to raise it to 21 if they want to get funding?

Or can they pass a national law making it 21?

Didn't quite a few states either have the 21 age limit already or were at least in the process?

Thank God! People under 18 will never use tobacco products again. Thank you, government overreach.

Will those in the military get an exemption?

So you can die in a war at 18, get the death penalty at 18 and vote for your leaders at 18, but you're not mature enough to smoke? Frick these nanny state types.

They started this in Austin months ago... When the guy at my corner store told me about it I was shocked. This is something I actually agree with though. It's almost 2020, no one should be using tobacco anymore.

They need to raise the voting age as well.

This affects a tiny group of people between 18-21.

I’m not going to lose sleep

Who are you to tell others what they can or can't do?

Considering the fact it's included in an appropriations bill, I haven't read the actual text.

The law gives regulators 180 days to write the new regulations and 90 days after that to start enforcement. By summer 2020 you won't be able to buy tobacco products under the age of 21.

For those keeping track, an 18 year old can vote, sign contracts including loans, and join the military, but they're not trusted enough to decide whether or not to drink or smoke.

That's a pretty ballsy statement. I'm sure we could apply that logic to something you do.

Sorry, but that call is not a decision you or the government should be making for people

They might as well lower the age of enlisting to 13. It would only be fair..

First it's tobacco, then it's soft drinks and then fatty foods. Next thing you know we're living the plot of Demolition Man.
