In naming new variant of Covid-19, WHO skipped over the next letter in the Greek alphabet

After the letter "Nu" comes the letter "Xi" in the Greek alphabet. Instead of doing the obvious thing and continuing on down the alphabet, WHO scientists skipped over "Xi" and moved straight to the next letter in the Greek alphabet - "Omicron." I guess they were concerned that that "Xi" variant would bring unwanted attention to the current Chinese premier, whose name is also Xi.

It’s weird I didn’t hear about these other variants between delta and here. Odd timing with the push to have kids suddenly vaccinated. And this new variant is especially harmful to young people I’m sure.

Of course the WHO isnt going to name a variant with a world leader's name.
That being said, I feel like the world should decide to call it the Xi Variant anyway, because

How did we get from Delta to Xi and why is this variant suddenly a “bad” one if all those others between Delta and Xi weren’t.
