You have the ideal situation. Places like that are fun to live when you're young, single, might have a little spare time, not planning on setting down roots.
Use your freakin head. If something looks sketchy, it is. Don't go dark places alone. Don't participate in minor illicit activity as that's how bigger problems happen.
Absolutely live in the city. Ride your bike or a streetcar to class. Eat at local holes in the wall. Meet some attractive coeds or local 20 somethings. Have a blast.

Young and single I'd just live in the city if you can afford not to live in the ghetto. It would be more fun.

Your clothes must be old, thrift store finds, the other side of the world from preppy. The fake wallet is a must. A friend always had a $20 bill in her fake so the perp wouldn't get angry.
Don't ever pretend to be drunk. Keep disposable gloves with you always in case you find yourself being a good Samaritan and dealing with blood or body fluids.

Spend time around campus and the neighboring areas. Offer free BJs to everyone you meet to garner favors. Use your knowledge gained in gross anatomy to master your craft. Eventually you will be prized by those in the street and viewed as valuable commodity. This will get you protection. Maybe AIDS and herpes too but you will at least survive med school.
