Actually I think she does get to keep the ring. The ring is the payment for a contract to marry. He breached the contract by backing out, not her. If she backs out, she has to return it.

Incorrect. The ring is not payment for a contract to marry. It is future good promised once a contract is fulfilled. She never gets to keep the engagement ring without marriage. No matter who breaks it up, because it is unjust enrichment, and the court cannot order or mandate a wedding to fulfill the contract, therefore once the contract is broken the ring goes back.

If they get married however, then she always gets the engagement ring.

She'll be married and pregnant within 2 years.

Fact.

Agreed.

And I wouldn't rule out that it will be with OP.

Hell, there's a decent chance she could be pregnant tomorrow from the OP.

I really don't understand this kind of mentality. Suggesting that the past is a waste indicates that you don't know how to live in the present.

THANK YOU!!!

I think we can all agree he won't be getting that ring back. She will flush it before she gives it back to OP.

Honest advice, dont break up with her. Tell her that you dont want to get married. She will break up with you and it will be easier on her.

I hope she comes home and tells OP she is pregnant before he can break the news.

Chasing after meaningless milestones in life is a recipe for constant disappointment.

Focusing on the here and now....what a relationship means to both people right now....that is a much better approach in my experience.

I made a point to understated that part of the law both in obligations and Persons aka family law.

while true you said they should be married and with kids. i disagree with that completely in general (much less someone before the age of 30).

And that's basically the same thing CW was saying (especially since he and his ole lady have been together for 10+ years). No idea why DV took offense to being questioned on that.

All she has to do is say "I'll tell the truth on the OT and talk about your inability to satisfy me .... or I can keep the ring."

Actually, ten years is a long time. A gentleman would let her keep the ring, and a lady would give it back to him.

It varies by state as to whether it is a gift that does not have to be returned or a conditional gift that has to be returned. Some courts have looked at who was at fault for the break up in determining who keeps the ring.

Oh she is, her ex bf was such a loser.

Now her current bf just said he needs "space" and moved out. They still see each other but don't sleep together and he recently set her up with one of his friends. Makes me glad I'm not single anymore

Holy shite. What if it goes down like this.

OP: Jill, I have something to tell you.

Jill: Ok! I have something to tell you, Lucky T.

OP: Well, let me go first because it's very important, and it has taken a lot of courage for me to say this.

Jill: What is it, Lucky T?

OP: I don't want to marry you.

Jill: Oh....*eyes watering*....I'm pregnant.

Hey now. This is a good plan.

Very Costanza-esque.
