I've been in a similar position, and actually did give up coffee for a few months. Here are some tips that may help:

L-theanine is your friend! I keep a bottle of this stuff with me always: LINK
If you've ever drank matcha and felt the focused, calm energy, you can thank l-theanine. Matcha is loaded with it, it's an amino acid that does really well when combined with caffeine. It helps prevent the nervous and racing mind, and generally makes me super calm, collected, and alert when taken with coffee. Can't recommend enough!

Another option: Swiss Water Processed decaf coffee.
Most coffee is decaffeinated using something close to rubbing alcohol (EA or MC method), and it tastes terrible. But most specialty roasters carry SWP or RSP decaf, which is a patented processing method that uses only water. I keep a bag on hand always for 4:00 pm onwards, and you can also blend 50% in when brewing your morning coffee to reduce caffeine but still get a great tasting cup with a smaller jolt.

Hope these help, and I wish you well. I get horrendous bouts of anxiety throughout the year, and caffeine definitely doesn't help. But it sucks to let it take away something as enjoyable as coffee. Keep up the fight!

I sincerely tried to give up coffee and the headaches got so bad I had to go back. Like, the worst headache of my life that was gone as soon as I finished that first cup. Now I just drink light roast and hope for the best.

This is my problem when I try to quit. Coffee doesn’t give me energy, but not drinking it gives me a horrible headache. I’ve been weaning myself off of caffeine lately. Almost down to none.

Anxiety sucks man. Caffeine definitely jacks with my anxiety and I definitely drink way mire than I should. I love coffee though so I just fight through it.

You don't have to drink the entire pot or a extra jumbo grande whateverthefrickalargeis every time you need some - I have a pint sized travel mug, drink it in the morning before I start driving and that's pretty much all of my caffeine intake for the day. Guess what? By 8pm my body is ready to shut it down and rest naturally.

I suggest this because I used to have a job that I had to wake up at 2am - every morning I had 40+oz of coffee, sometimes a 5hr energy on top of it at noon, then had to take sleeping pills or get completely shitfaced to go to bed at a normal time. I wrecked my body doing that crap.

You're attributing a result (better days) to giving up morning caffeine, but how do you think the two things are related, exactly?

I'm thinking your theory doesn't hold water.

Are you a woman?

I drink 3-4 pots of black coffee a day. My resting heart rate is in the high 50s low 60s.

Coffee increases your heartbeat.
My mind would be racing even before I left the driveway with all I need to do and accomplish that day. When I stopped morning coffee, I had a much more laid back approach to the day.

Lighter roasts have higher caffeine levels. Darker roasts have less. Roasting darker does not decaffeinate coffee, but it decreases it some.

Good luck with it. If you can get through the horrible headache phase without giving in.

I drank 6 cups of coffee yesterday and took a scoop of pre workout before the gym.
