In Lafayette because of budget issues they were asking private attorneys to volunteer as public defenders. They were sitting in court and would volunteer or be requested by the judge. I wonder how those defendants did compared to the usual.

Obviously not, but I wouldn't have a choice. I would definitely want a trial by judge if I was innocent though.

I wonder what the opinions are for people that have to sue the government but don't have money for an attorney.
I would imagine the gov asks for summary dismissal, citing some BS the pro se person is probably ignorant of, and if that fails, they stall and try to make the person bankrupt for money, patience, and time.

As a local PD with a unique knowledge of the Parish DA, I guarantee you that I/my firm will give you better representation than any paid attorney. Doesn’t matter the price. You’re welcome.

In some places, the PD office is shite and underfunded. In other places, the free PD lawyer beats the pants off the ones you could hire. It varies around the country.
The federal public defenders are generally excellent and as good or (usually) better than the lawyer you would pay shitloads of money. In state court, it really varies depending on location and funding.
The funding system for public defense in Louisiana is terrible. Even if the attorney is sharp and a true believer, they have no $$ for investigators or experts.
Of course, if you have money for those, you ain’t getting a public defender.

No. What you’re hearing is that a PD can be just as good, if not better, of an option to defend you and uphold your rights as when you throw money at someone.
