ranking your list:

LSU
State
Arkansas
OSU
OU

Outside of the list in no particular order would be UCLA, Dartmouth, UGA, Stanford, Princeton

Would be hard to pass up an opportunity to live on any of those campuses for an education

When I was 17 I applied to:

LSU
Ole Miss
Fordham
Hampden Sydney

Got into all but Hampden. Went to LSU based on scholarships.

You lived in both and you think Norman people are the weird ones?

At 17, I knew I wanted to attend LSU. I just did a year at SFA first

I guess I was rather naive at that age and didn't really appreciate the difference between the experience at different colleges. I know there were notorious party schools but I figured that I could find "my people" at any school. I admit even at that age my primary focus was academics of the schools because undergrad was a stepping stone for me.

With that in mind Oklahoma is the best academic school (without being specific about the major) and is enough better than the rest to make a difference if that is important.

The rest are in a fairly similar tier from top to bottom:

Ole Miss
LSU
Arky
Miss St
OK St

A particular major could completely upend that along with any plans for grad school and where they want to live later. It is a complex decision that is rarely decided on a single metric.

If by OSU you mean Ohio State, the that. If it means OkState, if would be OU or Univ of Oklahoma. Ok is a little better academically. Ole Miss, MSU, Arkansas, are a little rural, too blue collar, sounds poor academically

OU is a little but not a whole lot better than LSU. Norman is a better town.

Although I only skimmed the thread, the most important question is this:

What is he going to study?

We are in this exact situation w/our daughter. Choosing b/w LSU/Arky/OU. Arky will most likely win out. 90% of out-of-state tuition waived, 3 Fortune 500 companies nearby, beautiful/clean/safe city. LSU no longer offers Alumni tuition discounts, for out-of-state students, and OOS tuition is ridiculous, like most schools. I’d feel safer with her being 8.5 hrs away, in Arky, compared to only 4 hrs away in BR. I’m die hard LSU, but BR is turning into a cluster frick/crap hole.

I firmly believe the college depends on the kid. Not all people are the same. Find the one where the kid will thrive.

Not sure if it's the same as TX, but Arky offers some kind of reciprocal tuition with LA so you pay the same as in-state there. That's a pretty substantial plus.

Arkansas probably if I’m majoring in finance again. State if I wanted to be an engineer. None of these will “wow” anyone on a resume if you’re not getting a technical degree.

OSU is highly underrated in one category: hot chicks per capita. On par with LSU and Ole Miss.

There are some weird people in Norman. I’ve lived here for 24 years and I think I’ve figured it out: if you live in OK for a while and you still maintain that “academia elite” type of leftist mentality, you’ve got to be one weird mofo.

Arkansas would be high on my list, along with Ole Miss.
