FWIW, I’ve never gotten talk back whenever I asked for a straw at a place like that. It would be stupid on the server’s part.

Was in a restaurant in Charlotte two weeks ago on business and my lunch guest asked for a straw for his after lunch to go drink:

Guest: "Can I have a straw, please?"

Waitress: "No. We care about the environment here." and walks away.

Guest: Yells to her back. "You realize I haven't filled out the tip line on this check yet, right?"

The Dallas Rosita's restaurant across from Ace Hardware on Maple didn't give you water unless you asked for it way back in the 80's. They had signs up saying we need to conserve water. Just Googled them, and Yelp says, "Yelpers report this location has closed."

can't back this up with facts but supposedly the "environmentalist" say that straws are too light to be recycled (i.e. they get lost in the shuffle) so they go to a dump were they do not decompose for ~500 years unlike the plastic utensils.

From what I heard, it's a weight issue. Absolutely no clue if this is true or not and is pure hearsay but that is my understanding of the debate.

What do the customer's glandular problems have to do with straws?

Here's what's going on with lefty giant Starbucks:

quote:

Yet missing from this fanfare was the inconvenient fact that by ditching plastic straws, Starbucks will actually be increasing its plastic use. As it turns out, the new nitro lids that Starbucks is leaning on to replace straws are made up of more plastic than the company's current lid/straw combination.

Right now, Starbucks patrons are topping most of their cold drinks with either 3.23 grams or 3.55 grams of plastic product, depending on whether they pair their lid with a small or large straw. The new nitro lids meanwhile weigh either 3.55 or 4.11 grams, depending again on lid size.

Concerning straws non-recyclable weight:

quote:

This is cold comfort given the fact that even most of the stuff that is put in recycling bins still winds up at the dump. The company did not address, nor did it dispute, that its transition to strawless lids would increase its overall plastic consumption

*Takes sip through straw* Proof that most environmentalists get their rocks off thinking of themselves as morally superior.

If she really cares, she should take a trip to one of these countries at the top of the list and hassle them.

Yeah there's no reason to use a plastic straw. What's the problem here?

I worked at a pretty upscale restaurant that had 8 pieces of silverware per table setting. Each setting had three glasses. It was always comical when people requested a straw. There were certain “types” you can count on doing that. Usually the same people that used the wrong silverware and had strange food preparation requests.
I’m sure the cruise ships will be the last to ban the straws cause that is their crowd.
