Europe is cool as long as you have an American salary or work for a US multinational, other wise your living standards are going to plummet.
The jobs don't pay well, taxes are high, gasoline is twice the price, 20% to 25% VAT on all consumer goods. Living accomodations are pretty drab as far a space and appliances.
If you don't mind reducing your lifestyle it can be a nice change of pace, but it's meager living comparatively.
I lived in Hamburg and Rotterdam for almost 4 years combined after my father left Heidelberg.
The Dutch are weird and dull simultaneously and the Germans don't bathe daily. People always talk about the French and bad hygiene, but the Germans are just as bad if not worse.
If money or work were not an issue then Spain or Portugal would be the move. Both have lack luster economies though if you did need to work.

Ireland for me
I have been to Ireland, Sweden, France, and Hungary. I loved them all, but Ireland was the only one where I didn’t feel that “I need to get home” feeling towards the end of the trip

Been to both Switzerland and Germany, it would be one of those two.

I’m fascinated with Italy and am planning to go in a few years, so am researching. It looks beautiful and I might be interested in living in a non/tourist area if I could move there.
Costa Rica was amazing. Different way of life there for sure.
Thought about CR after returning from vacay, but seemed foreigners really have no rights there, and one’s home could be squatted on if you left for an extended time. And while it seems like it would be nice to have a “2nd home” there, I don’t think full time would be for me.
The way this country is going, I hope there are other suitable places out there similar to what we had here bf the commies and progressives took over.

we went to Dublin last fall and rented a car, as we were doing to the paperwork the lady pointed out that there is a surcharge for going to Belfast, and it was a pretty hefty fee

Good friend of mine is from Belgium. She made more as a receptionist here in JNU than her mom did as a career govt worker in Belgium. Shes a helicopter pilot by trade but during Covid took an office job.

Depends on my means.
Rich — probably Switzerland.
More modest — probably Portugal
And the answer is yes, I’ve told my wife I’d love to retire to a Europe in a small / moderate sized Citi. But that’s still many many years away…

I’d probably live in Sicily or one of the Aegean islands of Greece. Somewhere with blue water, cool ocean breezes, and mountains.

I find Germany to be a good blend. It's European but not "too" foreign. Love Spain too but for my money, maybe Munich.
I'm likely moving to Hamburg this fall. Going to be a huge adjustment but I'm looking forward to learning the language, better work-life balance and the opportunity to travel around Europe economically. Even with the tax increase I'll be making almost 80% more and working at least half as much.
The only thing about Northern Germany is the cold winters and wet conditions. I've been told it's similar to Vancouver's weather patterns.
