99% of cops are good people who put thier life on the line for us, but that doesn't mean there isn't room for improvement on training.

A bad cop isn't fixed with training. These people are just bad employees and cant handle having any power no matter what job they are in.

Sure, there are some cops like in BR that can make a good living but they also have to work almost verey day spending their off days working details at Wal Mart and stuff like that. Smaller departments don't have these options for officers so many get a few years experience and then move on to the closest large metro department.

Ive seen department that 15 years ago had it made. Everybody wanted to work there. Troppers, BRPD, etc were applying. Money dried up, huge loss in tax revenue and now they are luck to get one "quality" applicant. Usually its someone that has "bad cop" reputation that's been run off from another department. This isn't just a local problem, its in every county, small city across the country.

Louisiana Sheriffs make 150k, while the deputies that are out there interacting with the public and doing the dirty work are lucky to break 40k

My post in no way is a vote for the tax. Just showing the issue. I know lots of people will say that a person knows what they are gonna make before going into a career. I agree.

Kenner PD's budget is like $70MM/yr. They are rolling in the dough.

Problem with everywhere else is that money is wasted on damn near everything. The DWI task force guys in BR all make like $150-200k/yr

we already pay nearly 40 cents a gallon gas tax here in texas, you may or may not know this, but im in the gas business believe me I love having to set aside a nice $40-50k a week to send our government. I make 10-15 cents a gallon and the government makes 39 cents a gallon. I have millions invested in my 5 stores, they dont have a dime at risk

I'm an anti-tax conservative but I don't see how you can complain about gas taxes as a gas station owner. You are not paying those taxes. The customer is. You are not sending 50k a week to uncle sam. The customer has already paid it and you were just holding on to it for a week. Also those taxes go directly to the infrastructure that allows your business to exist at all. Who would buy gasoline if the roads were unusable? Gasoline tax is one of the most fair taxes out there because it is a use tax. The people who use the highways the most pay the most tax. And if you never use roads, you don't have to pay the tax for them. 18 wheelers damage the roads more so they pay a higher tax rate for diesel.

Of all the things in the world to put taxes towards, police salaries, probably wouldn't be one at the top.

I'd start with dedicated funds for better schools and community improvement before we got to police.

given the FACT that we know police are underpaid,

Police officers are no different than bank tellers, firemen, or teachers. It's a free market economy. It is not a FACT that they are underpaid. It is a FACT that they signed compensation agreements of their own free will.

I hate people who throw their opinion out there as a FACT, especially when they do it in ALL CAPS.

Yeah that's how most careers work. You don't just start out making $100k a year at most jobs. Usually takes a few years to work your way up.

And frick getting taxed more. I betcha any money that our idiot new governor probably spent a shite load of money redecorating the governor's mansion from top to bottom. I know for a fact that the idiots at the secretary of state changed carpets in their office for no other reason than they didn't like the color of the old one. Didn't stop there. Bought new desks for everyone. Also made people drive around the SOS Dodge minivans to put miles on them so they would t have to give them up. Just drive around on the clock doing nothing.
Add to the fact that they could probably get rid of half the workforce at that office and not notice it, quit spending money like idiots, then I'll think about voting for more taxes.

I ask because let's face it the reason why police have issues with recruitment and hiring is the low pay. They should start at at least $50k with brass making six figures. A tax on gasoline could accomplish that even with the future reduction in marijuana related arrests.

Cops are paid fine.

Teachers and education system need more money. be proactive with education, not reactive with cops.

I'd stop driving. The last thing we need are police forces that get money hungry.

That is how we get speed traps, bullshite ticky tacky seatbelt tickets, inspection sticker roadblocks, constant lowering of BAC levels for DUI, trumped up charges, the taxes on the public that are unwritten laws, etc.

The spin-cycle of the judicial system being designed to keep people in and out of courts, paying fines, paying this paying that, community service, prison labor camps, and an expressly disproportionate sentencing between different races and income levels is something that we need to end not continue to support.

I know there is a lot of emotions regarding police right now, and I love my buddies that are cops, they do a heck of a job out there and they care a lot about their cities and the people that make up their communities.

Militarizing our police forces that we once called peace officers only raised the stakes and increased the tension as civilians are increasingly seen as the enemy and that causes people to refuse to work with police and has increased the negative view of officers of the law in many populations.

Police pay isn't the biggest issue, the execution of police training and a lack of compassion and reason most officers show these days are what I believe can be changed the easiest and bridges can begin to be built with populations that are anti-police.

Respecting the law and respecting officers begins when citizens feel that police are there to help not ostracize.

Why not take 5 cents out of the existing gas taxes and stop wasteful spending in other areas?

We already give gov enough tax revenue to do what you propose. How about they balance the budget before they get another cent?

Im complaining bc how many industries are out there where the government makes more than the owner per item sold? In my case I sell gallons, the government makes a fixed 39 cents a gallon give or take, I do not. In good times I can get up to 30 cents a gallon but most times its 10-15 cents before credit card fees. I dont mind, I make great money overall but its insane that the government makes nearly quadruple what I make per gallon and I take on all the risk. Find me another industry where barrier of entry is north of $1M per location and the government out earns the owner per unit thats all Im saying. Also with gas where it is today, that tax is insanely high. Gas cost me $1.465 today, the tax was 39 cents ontop of that so how massive a percentage is that to the end user?

How many other products do we have in this country as heavily taxed as gasoline in terms of things we use on a regular basis? Again the average person doesn't even think twice about gasoline tax, but its there and its steep

Agreed. I have never really understood the Stockholm syndrome from leftists like the one you're quoting in this response post.

Let me guess. If we pay more taxes now, will that be the last time they stop saying a tax raise will "fix everything" so I can get on with my life and stop giving them money to burn?
