The problem with Louisiana is you don't ever get what you pay for. The corruption is beyond repair at this point.
This is the damn truth. Really this is all just talking. I'm a repairman not a politician. I was just curious as what can fix the problems we have.
Even though my porch light is blue right now, I'm in the "scared of police" camp. I have had really bad experiences yet have never been convicted of a crime in my life.

silly OP
Louisianians want nice things like roads, and police, and schools but they dont want to pay for them
its much easier to just whine about the issues rather than take initiative to fix them

this is true. How many millions of tax payer dollars has the state spent on roads studies or floodway studies for projects they know would never happen. I want to say Baton Rouge has spent ten million on Loop studies in the last twenty years alone.
Not building a thing, just studying.

typical conservative response. I do agree in many ways, but there is a budget shortfall for law enforcement and something that could quickly generate funds is needed.
And just throwing a another tax is the typical liberal big government response. You could raise taxes $1 on each gallon and in 5 years we will still be having to answer should we increase taxes again.

I know. I know.
The entire premise for the thread was to see what mattered more the recent love of police or the hatred of taxes.
Oddly enough I pay most of my taxes to my local sheriffs.

I'm fine paying a little more on both IF we see improvement. The problem with Louisiana is you don't ever get what you pay for. The corruption is beyond repair at this point
This right here.
We pay taxes and it is supposed to go to certain things then once it is passed a couple years later it is needed to fix this or that shortfall that the govt didn't account for and it never goes where it is supposed to.
Sure let's raise the gas tax for police. How much you wanna bet they never see a cent of it. Just like the roads are going to shite because they raided that fund too.
Also yes gas prices are down now but they will rise again. So do we put a limit on it so when it gets to almost $4 the tax is removed?

It isn't as simple as you don't want a tax so you hate cops

What is insane to me is all the government incentives to buy electric cars when those cars get charged for free at tesla charging stations meanwhile internal combustion engine cars get taxed at .39/gallon.

If the tax money would get spent on what they say it's for people wouldn't be so damn hesitant to give more.

The money for training or whatever needs to be done to address the few bad apples needs to be allocated in the existing budgets IMO. Wasn't there some repair shop racket for cruisers exposed a while back? There's just too much of that type of thing that goes on to just blindly open your wallet because we're emotional right now.
99% of cops are good people who put thier life on the line for us, but that doesn't mean there isn't room for improvement on training. That said, what I'd really like to see is a widescale public campaign on enteracting with cops. Too many people think that they can talk back to cops these days. Compliance needs to be taught in schools since parents are incapable it seems. Do they have DARE cops anymore?

If we could pass a gas tax of 5 cents, with all proceeds going to police payroll
Problem is we have been screwed by this type of stuff in the past, for instance, when the lottery was coming to the state they put it up for a vote and said all the proceeds would go to education, and they did, BUT they took that much money away from education that it was getting out of the general budget and at the end of the day education got no more money than it did previously and the general budget got an increase and was devoured by the politicians

Lottery is an amazing tax on the poor. It cracks me up to see people who can barely pay bills buy $20 and now $50 scratch offs. The state is brilliant at adding these expensive scratch offs knowing that nobody but the poor for the most part buys them. Always nice to see people cash a $400 weekly check at my place and grab $100 of scratch offs before heading home

No, frick paying more taxes, I say jack up the fines on criminals, make the frickers that require more police pay for it. I'm not against the idea, they deserve more $ but I pay enough taxes. Same with teachers, wanna pay them more, each student has to come up with $75 each year that goes to salaries. Think skin-in-the-game.
Posted on 7/24/16 at 7:15 pm to Boston911
You racist bastard how will the poor and illegal immigrants come up with $75 a year to go to public schools then????

okay, let's keep the starting pay at $15 an hour and just post links when crap cops shoot people for no reason or when call response averages over four hours in NOLA.
You could also say that if you raise the pay to $50k that we will have an increase in crap cops, since the academies will fill up with people making alot less?
You want less crap cops? The fish start to stink at the head. If the ones at the top arent crooked and hold the entire force accountable instead of hiding behind the think blue line, things will change. But, as we have seen time and time again, they are above the law. Fix that shite and then come talk to me about a frickin raise.
