Well, you could choose to make them coffee and ask them about their day. I'd unload buckshot first followed by 2 shells of bird shot but make coffee if you want.

It's hard to say what someone's intentions are when they break into your home. Would be kinda foolish to not expect the worst, no?

The real answer is we probably all have no clue how we'd react unless we've been in a similar situation.
I've played out the scenario in my head a million times. Pre-children, whether by myself or with my wife, I'm grabbing the gun but trying to lock ourselves in a closet, staying quiet and calling 911. Let em take what they want in the 5 minutes they're there, staying alive is priority 1.
But since I've had kids and having their own bedroom on the 2nd floor while i'm on the 1st floor completely changes that dynamic, as priority 1 is making sure they're alive. I basically have no choice but to confront the situation. And in my head, thinking about it, if I know 100% it's an intruder, I'm coming out shooting without much thought to it, other than the obvious stuff(direction of shots vs beds with kids in it, etc...)

If someone is willing to break in your house knowing you are home (I'm assuming they've done the research) then it's kill or be killed in my opinion. I'll smoke them without a 2nd thought.

Maybe they just want my TV, but with a family to protect blah blah blah, I probably shouldn't stand around and wait to figure if that's really all they want.
it may not be right 100% of the time, but i basically feel like if someone is brazen or desperate enough to break into my house, how far away are they really from the next step, which is murder if it means ensuring they get away with it?

I'll say this:
If someone is willing to break into a home in the middle of the night, when they know someone is probably sleeping in there, then they've probably already accepted that they may have to use violence upon people in that home in order to complete whatever their goals are and get away
in short, not everyone that breaks into your house is going in there to hurt you, but the majority of them are ready to hurt you if it comes down to you or them
If someone is willing to break into a home in the middle of the night, when they know someone is probably sleeping in there, then they've probably already accepted that they may have to use violence upon people in that home in order to complete whatever their goals are and get away
in short, not everyone that breaks into your house is going in there to hurt you, but the majority of them are ready to hurt you if it comes down to you or them
