Knowing what we know now, Bryan was definitely being deceptive. He didn't want that cop knowing anything about the area of the country he was coming from.
The dad, no doesn't seem he was being deceptive.

I would be curious how many white ELANTRA's were in the Pullman and Moscow areas. I believe it was around December 7 when the police first mentioned the white ELANTRA… Certainly his vehicle was noticed by someone that parked near him on campus. No?
Yahoo Article
Article saying at least 90 White Elantras were registered to park at the University of Idaho. That’s a lot just for one Campus. I’d assume there were thousands of White Elantras in Pullman based off of that.

think his dad was more of an innocent pawn in Bryan's plan, but was aware of the reason Bryan wanted to drive the car itself 2500 miles away. Bryan calls his dad and asks about coming home to PA for the winter break. This may be something they planned out a long time ago or Bryan blames it on all the crazy stuff happening in that area lately, saying he just wants to get away. "I don't know if y'all have heard the news, but they're looking for a white Elantra, dad... It's all everyone around town is talking about. I can't even drive my car to the gas station without everyone looking at me. The cops have harassed me multiple times, and everyone stares at me and some have even cornered me everywhere I go! I can't live like this, dad. (His parents assume he's innocent and could never do anything like this by default, as any parent would). I HAVE to get rid of this car, everyone here thinks I did something horrible and I'm being ostracized and harassed for no reason, just because I happen to have a white Elantra!" "But I can't sell the car here, for obvious reasons. Nobody here would buy it since everyone's looking for some killer in one, and it would just make me look guilty if I sold it. I'm thinking about coming home for the winter break to sell it there" or "I'm thinking about selling it while I'm home for winter break". Dad just assumes that his son is going through some accusatory and horrible shite because he happens to drive the type of car everyone is talking about in Small Town, Idaho. Dad feels sorry for his son, "damn thats tough, son. I'll fly out and help you drive it back so we can either sell it or trade cars until all this dies down" On the way back to PA, dad and son get pulled over twice. Dad knows the situation and thinks that his innocent son is being secretly targeted simply for driving a white Elantra. Hence the nervousness, over sharing, and topic changes. He doesn't think his son did anything wrong but feels like he needs to cover for him and the car, he's nervous for an entirely different reason than Bryan. He thinks his son is being unfairly accused and targeted

So i get it why the dad mentioned where they were coming from and going and how they were driving for “hours… DAYS…”. and insinuating we are trying to get away from the crazy mad world of swat teams and shooters and just get to the peaceful poconos, officer.
I don't get it. You aren't required to tell them your business. More talking equals more questions. You can be polite and give some info to hope to get out of a tix but that's all they're getting.
If I'm pulled over, doesn't happen often, and I'm not alone I tell the passengers to stfu and let me do the talking.
Poster talking about his friend mentioning getting some drinks and Greek food would've gotten a tongue lashing if that were me.
Keep the conversation short and sweet and to the point.

White IS the most common car color, and the Elantra is a very common purchase for lower to lower-middle income individuals - ie college students and young people.
Put two fairly large college campuses within 10 miles of eachother, in locales that are fairly rural (and have tons of aforementioned lower/lower-middle class people themselves) to boot - and there's probably thousands of white Elantras and Sonatas within a 50 mile radius. That's not to mention white cars made by Mazda, Nissan, Honda, Toyota, Ford, etc. with a similar body style that tend to be lower to middle class type cars.
ETA - this just really shines a light on the great police work that went into catching this man. I'm in law enforcement and I legitimately have no idea how they determined with 100% certainty that they were looking for a white Elantra from the videos I've seen, when the profile of that car is so non-descript it could've been several different makes and models. I'm guessing they have a lot more that they're not sharing, and some pretty damning/clear video

You're correct but if I get pulled over in Mississippi, driving from say New Orleans to Sarasota, I'll either say nothing or tell the cop I'm driving to Florida. I'm not going to say, "I'm driving to Chic-Fil-A."

Not everyone can handle talking to the police.
I was in a car with my friend and he was pulled over. He said the stupidest shite. I was sitting there thinking
A simple stop lasted 20 min because he kept talking gibberish. They want you to talk.

Exactly, be polite, respectful, even apologetic, but most importantly, be quick. You're already guilty of violating a traffic law, you know it and they know it; don't give them a reason to be curious about what else you might be up to.
People who volunteer unrequested, irrelevant information look like they're hiding something.

I'll bet the cops have other vids of the car and possible a partial plate. They have not shown all their cards.
But combined with the genealogical DNA it wasnt difficult once that hit.

Probably meant BTK, as in Dennis Rader.
He and I have never communicated, thank God

Definitely don’t think they have shown nearly all their cards, but I’ve seen they have looked into 22,000 registered White Elantras around the country.
I think this 100% came down to the DNA first, then they discovered the family owned a White Elantra.
I don’t think they had a plate number and don’t think they knew who he was as a suspect or anything until Christmas time frame

Unless you are suggesting the dad is in on the coverup, it does not matter
I don't give a rats arse about the dad or any other theory. My point is that driving 2500 miles (with or w/o companionship) during the mid year break is seldom utilized.
