Man why question it this hard??
We have a lady around shreveport who looks like shes in rough shape... drives around a tiny old bus and clear just buys a ton of stuff at sams and resells it...but has she made my son's day a few times. He actually asked for her today but at 3 doesnt understand she's not on demand.
Its just a couple $2 fudscicles but it always makes the day special. Honestly me and my wife and both shocked and happy our toddler in 2025 gets to experience it

I had an ice cream truck years ago. Around 20 years ago. I think the gross per hour was around $40. I sold shaved snowballs. However it never caught on as kids wanted ice cream. It wasn’t as profitable as the snowballs. I cooked the syrup so it was better than an average stands. Think of sweet tea having the sugar cooked and not just mixed. Was too busy with work and it was too much to do.
You wouldn’t make a nickel in upper middle class neighborhoods. In the lower class ones I could gross around $80 an hour on paycheck Friday evenings.

My issue with the guys I see is they drive way too fast through the neighborhood. By the time you get outside with a wallet they 2 streets over. No joke, 40 mph through the neighborhood.

It's always ice cream season south of the 35th parallel.
Lighten up Francis
Drug dealer? Sometimes, but if they're responsible we're OK with that.
We have one here in the LP
Ice cream cone for the kids and an ice cream cone with special gummie sprinkles for daddy.

When I was a kid, we had a sweet older lady who drove her ice cream truck in our neighborhood 7 or so months out of the year.
Mrs Pat was great and if it was you birthday she would give you a free item.
We did have this weirdo start coming around in a different truck and it seemed he was indeed dealing drugs. Someone passed around paper flyers warning about what he was up to.
I was around 15 when he started coming around and I noticed he would stay stopped in front of one house for quite a while. He did end up getting busted.

Back in the early 1980s I ran a route for about three months. Most days were pretty fun. Everyone loves the ice cream truck. You’d meet all kinds of characters on your route.
I’d hit the Borden Factory early in the morning and then head out. The hood was most lucrative regardless of the day of week because they had so many children in each house. It was also dangerous as you’re rolling around with a bunch of cash. You could easily bank $500-$1k per day if you were running your route correctly. Slow was the key to making money. Too fast and you didn’t give people time to grab their money and get outside.
I stopped doing the route after three months because I got jumped and robbed in the hood. That day I had my best friend riding with me. I was running my route and came upon a lot being cleared by a bunch of hood rats with machetes and other tools of the trade. They stopped me like all people do and things went bad quickly. The one with a machete tried to grab the cash box and I caught him. He didn’t like that I caught him and jumped in my truck through the front door. Another was following. He then grabbed the cash box. I was in the driver’s seat and punched the gas. My friend pushing rats out of the vehicle. Hood rats went flying….cash flying…people chasing us. Crazy! I immediately ended my career as an ice cream driver about 30 minutes later. frick that.

Our ice cream truck guy is first and foremost a curb shopper. He has plenty of room in his big arse van to take home all kinds of shite.
I've never seen him actually sell any ice cream but he has the music so I assume he does.

My neighborhood has a frozen drink/cocktail truck go around with 90s Super Mario music. Haven't seen an ice cream truck since our ice cream man was arrested.

I think the question is not “why” but “how”. Ice cream truck is awesome. But how does it possibly make money anymore? The costs and time can’t possibly worth it to drive around the neighborhoods. Now, park that truck near a playground and that’s where the money is at

That’s what I’m saying. Like I can get buying in bulk but even those margins can’t be there anymore for whatever underlying reason. I suppose that drives my interest. Nobody actually be doing this as realistic side hustle
