I didn't mean it to sound like highest taxed overall I meant in certain areas. But point still stands, the salary is not good when just over the border you can see a significant increase in pay and quality of life in areas.

Sad that it took IBM for LSU to start focusing on CS.

Glad they met the threshold. This was a nice win for Louisiana and Baton Rouge.

That's part of the appeal of places like Louisiana and Kansas to IBM. They can save a bit in salary and develop relationships with colleges and universities that produce graduates with lower salary expectations than those on the east and west coast.

Obviously. One of many reasons Louisiana keeps losing population.

Baton Rouge and Louisiana are doing what they are supposed to. IBM is going through structural changes now and is actually cutting employment in a lot of the US despite the strong economy.

The deal outlined by the Jindal administration strongly encourages IBM to stay for 15+ years and applies penalties for them to leave. If they have a slower onboarding schedule for new hires, they'll end up having to extend their penalty period even longer if they want to keep their tax breaks.

This is actually a pretty promising deal for Louisiana and beneficial to IBM assuming average salaries in the region remain lower than in other areas. I don't see that changing anytime soon unless there are a lot more tech jobs materialize in the area. That's not likely to happen, at least not quickly.

The salary is low. Cost of living is low but then you have to look at things like quality of life and the highest taxed state in the country. You could make a short trip over to Texas in various areas with plenty of hiring and way better salary. There's a reason you don't see heavy tech industry jobs galore in places like BR.

Overall Tax Burden for Louisiana is ranked #29 and Texas is ranked #34. Just five short years ago Louisiana was ranked 45th.

Quality of life is certainly better in TX with no state income tax, no need to send kids to private school spending 10K+ per year, plus not to mention just about everything else is cheaper (car insurance is 1/2, house insurance, electric, labor, etc.. all cheaper.

No talent in the area to recruit. Pretty simple really. Why would anyone waste time in this industry in that area? The salary is low. I blame LSU for the dearth of tech talent in BR and LA as a whole

LSU's Computer Science department is terrible. Easily one of the worst run degree programs at the university. ULL and LaTech are a better place to earn a tech based degree by leaps and bounds.

They are attempting to draw from ULL and La-Tech.

I agree about the CS program at LSU. It's a shame that it took IBM for them to really start investing in it. Hopefully it can move the needle and be more competitive. From what I hear, they are starting to push pretty hard with their late infusion of cash.

not a surprise.

I get calls from headhunters in that direction once or twice a year, because my first few IT jobs were internships in and around BR. They hard sell the position and potential for upwards movement.

Then I tell them cut to the point, how much? Then I laugh at them and tell them to call me back with a serious answer. No one they want is going to move to Baton Rouge, LA for $65k/yr. it’s laughable.

You'd think they would offer a more competitive salary because hiring two $80k/yr employees has to be easier than hiring three$50k/yr tech employees

I'd also wonder if they could simply "reassign" a telecommuting employee to the BR office even though the person lives in Texas. It would be a way to game the system

They verify residency of each employee.

That's why I did the ISDS instead.
That degree was just changing from being called QBA and LSU was on top of their game, being one of very few State schools in the country with an Oracle server to teach kids Database Programming.
We also had SAP classes to expose us to the ERP concept that was relatively new.
Our Database programming classes were legit for the time and, with Javascript and HTML(all done from scratch in notepad) with Visual Basic, we were plenty qualified for jobby jobs after my graduation date in 98.

I really wish I knew about the ISDS program when I attended LSU. I graduated in business management and used my tech background from the Navy as well as certs I've earned to get into the industry

A vast majority of the employees are making sub 50k. Salary starts at 38-42

The way the deal is structured, they divide the total payroll by $46K and that's how the state gets their number.

Louisiana needs IBM. I wish them the best. The company is going through some changes now, but hopefully they can establish roots in Louisiana.

Then isn't that dishonest advertising. If you base the employee rate by salary instead of actual people, then you are misleading the public.

We have 575 new hires, we are growing. No, in reality you only have 320 new people. It gives a false sense of growth.

I'm not saying I dont support LA getting businesses. I just dont like misleading practices. All this does is just confirm that LA is not growing as much as people think.

I delivered pizzas 94-98 in college.
01-03 as second job when ex1 was in law school.
11-16 as second job when ex2 left me AND put me in a fricked up bind resulting in bankruptcy.

I make decent IT money for the work I do(lack of ). But when $3k a month after taxes goes to child support and tuition, dance, piano, gymnastics, etc for 4 kids and 2 ex wives.

Money beez tight. But 16 things got better and I'm just poor now. But not pizza peddlin poor.
