We also had SAP classes to expose us to the ERP concept that was relatively new.

I didn’t know they had SAP classes there.
Does LSU have an S/4 system stood up?

Then isn't that dishonest advertising. If you base the employee rate by salary instead of actual people, then you are misleading the public.

We have 575 new hires, we are growing. No, in reality you only have 320 new people. It gives a false sense of growth.

I'm not saying I dont support LA getting businesses. I just dont like misleading practices. All this does is just confirm that LA is not growing as much as people think.

Most economic studies and company Press Releases use the same metric. It's a common industry practice used so that commoners can understand the economic impact

I'm a tech sector guy and can honestly say that I don't know anyone who works for IBM BR

I know some people that have been there for a while and hear all the dirt from them.

IBM scammed the state: they basically don't give anyone raises because they know they can hire a new person that's subsidized by the state immediately. Almost no one stays longer than 9-12mos. It's basically a paid internship and as soon as your training is done you can move to another state and make at least 2x what IBM pays.

I guarantee you as soon as their free rent ends on that building they'll move on to the next mid-sized sucker city.

How many of those employees "work from home"

The work this building does isn't really a telecommute business. The reason you don't see people during the week is most of them are working on projects elsewhere: Atlanta, Dallas, San Antonio, etc. They work at the contract site Monday through Thursday and are in the office for a bit on Friday.

Idk what they have now. This was 97-98. It was a very basic intro class. We were NOT learning to code that ABAP stuff for SAP.

This state desperately needs to diversify its economy.

Petrochemical is great and we certainly need to support growth there but we absolutely need to expand if we are to improve things here in LA.

Yes, I live in Lafayette and the economy badly needs diversification

Fun Fact: LSU still uses the same system for their student information database as they were using when you were a student in 97.

Let that sink in...

Overall Tax Burden for Louisiana is ranked #29 and Texas is ranked #34. Just five short years ago Louisiana was ranked 45th.

I think what skews people's opinion is the local taxes that are not included in the #29 ranking. Though the one I saw we were #27.

Louisiana has the highest average combined Sales Tax in the country. (State and Local)

When you pay local sales and property taxes our tax burden is crazy. Then tack on annual inspection stickers, Drivers License, Vehicle Registration, Hunting License and on and on it seems we are taxed like crazy. Also, if you live in BR or NOLA you have the private school tax.

Exactly, especially if Louisiana ever hopes to stop the outmigration of its best and brightest to other states, particularly Texas.

A majority of them are consultants that travel to out of state clients M-Th.

What does that office specialize in?

Traveling consultants with specialization in some kind of Enterprise system make substantially more than $46K per year. Even the BA’s start at almost double that. Senior Cons and Managers are more like $145K-$200K at the big 4, and I’m sure IBM is close to that.

IBM’s tax rebate agreement with the state allows them to base a job at $46,000 per year. So if they are basing enterprise consultants in Baton Rouge, each one of them probably counts as 2-4 “employees” as far as their tax rebate goes. So they probably hired 300-400 higher skilled people with some entry level BA’s from LSU, ULM, and ULL mixed in.

No one is staying in Louisiana though. They do 9 months here and then hop on the first train out of town to a job that pays $70-80k. They won't get that at IBM here. They'll get mid-40s working 80hr weeks with next to zero chance for any sort of raise.

Yes seriously. Talk to anyone that works there. It's a shite show and are milking the state without us getting anything in return. We're literally paying to train employees to move to other states for better opportunities.

False. Those employees earn a living there and contribute to the local economy. The company hires both experienced locals and entry level employees from local universities. They are helping to increase demand for New IT talent in the area, which will help increase the lower salaries featured in Louisiana in that sector.

Louisiana desperately needs to diversify. IBM is a nice win to have in their corner. Even DXE isn’t a bad thing to have. It’s good to have those skilled jobs in the area, even if some of them get transferred to other areas and others get rotated in.

Relocation in that line of work is extremely common.

Other alternatives?

It's a building block to more. Show a company a little larger that we don't frick absolutely everything up.

It isn't Apple moving their HQ here, but damn you have to start somewhere.

Exactly why it's a scam. As soon as you get some experience you can move to a much better job in a new state. They will hire just about anyone so most of the people starting there aren't getting jobs elsewhere or are looking for a career change. But mostly it's people fresh out of college.

This.

I think Baton Rouge and New Orleans could use a few more IBM’s and DXE’s, especially if they can lock them into rebates that keep them there for 10-15+ years.

If 1 out of 20 stay or spinsoff a startup then that is how the economy gets built up.
