IBM BR narrowly meets jobs benchmark, needs to hire 225 more in 12mos

The Advocate
IBM’s total payroll for the Baton Rouge center for the year ending June 30 was $26.4 million, the equivalent of 575 full-time workers under the firm’s deal with the state.
The Jindal-era deal made the salary benchmark for full-time workers $46,000 a year, and the state calculates the number of jobs by dividing the annual payroll by that number.
The 575 full time equivalent workers was three more than IBM was required to employ in 2018, after the Edwards administration extended its agreement with the company, giving it more time to reach its ultimate goal of 800.
The state and city-parish of East Baton Rouge offered an incentive package of nearly $147 million over 17 years in exchange for the firm’s 800 jobs. After spending $57 million on grants and tax refunds--and another $14 million on bolstering college computer science programs, especially at LSU--the company fell well short of its 800-job goal last year.
TBH I am skeptical they reached 575 equivalent jobs. I'm a tech sector guy and can honestly say that I don't know anyone who works for IBM BR

How many of those employees "work from home"

Texas continues to laugh at BR...

I'm wondering the same thing. They built a beautiful building downtown that isn't very busy when I pass by it.

I've seen a few Asians walking around Downtown with IBM shirts a few times

Good for them!
We need them to stay.

Thats the wrong attitude. Everyone wants them to fail so they can complain more.

They constantly have hiring ads online but nothing I'm really qualified for.

I can tell you their employees are always looking to leave due to the following:
1) Pay
2) Many are hired and told they will work one job/technology, then end up working on another
3) Many are promised training and development that doesn't happen

It will be semi-abandoned in 5 years unless BR can get it's shite together.
Between IBM building and the water campus I have not seen the quality of that area improve one bit.

And it’ll be extended again when they don’t reach the goal again.

Me too and I don't either. 46k is a really shitty salary even in BR unless all they are hiring is entry level employees.

The way the deal is structured, they divide the total payroll by $46K and that's how the state gets their number.
So someone that makes $92,000 per year counts as two employees. A manager that makes $184,000 per year counts as four in the eyes of the state.
Louisiana needs IBM. I wish them the best. The company is going through some changes now, but hopefully they can establish roots in Louisiana.

No talent in the area to recruit. Pretty simple really. Why would anyone waste time in this industry in that area? The salary is low. Cost of living is low but then you have to look at things like quality of life and the highest taxed state in the country. You could make a short trip over to Texas in various areas with plenty of hiring and way better salary. There's a reason you don't see heavy tech industry jobs galore in places like BR.

Taxes in Louisiana are too high, but IBM isn't paying much in taxes. And they are enjoying the relatively low wages in Louisiana.
