This.

I think Baton Rouge and New Orleans could use a few more IBM’s and DXE’s, especially if they can lock them into rebates that keep them there for 10-15+ years

New Orleans had a pretty good startup community going when GE was booming. Lots of people moonlighting. Haven't heard about how everything is going in a while since I lost my connection to that group.

Good. It’s helping build those programs at LSU and Southern.

They aren’t hiring many traveling consultants at $46K even right out of college. They are most likely paying them more and counting them as 1.5-2 jobs each depending on their salary.

And it’s 2018. Advancements often require people being open to relocation. IBM simply can’t have a ladder to the top of every service offering they have in every office.

It’s not a huge office, but we have to start somewhere. Can’t get on base without stepping up to the plate. Dismissing this as a bad thing just because it isnt everything to all potential employees at every possible skill level is a horrible mindset to have.

With that logic, there is no point in even trying to develop any new industry at all.

Me too and I don't either. 46k is a really shitty salary even in BR unless all they are hiring is entry level employees.

Starting salary for most tech workers at entry level jobs in BR is sub 40k. That is on the higher end. Had several people try to offer 27-29k with 4 years of experience and a degree.

The only real way an IT person can get a raise without jumping into a new skillset or specialty is to change jobs.

Very typical among big consulting companies. Their offices are half full, then get crowded on Fridays.

ummmm, how about just driving 4 hours West down I-10, where if your IT resume is remotely decent, you could find a $75k starting salary job in Houston?

People in IT at most levels in Louisiana are getting paid half of what they could potentially make in Houston or Dallas.

That. That is exactly why there's very little IT talent in Louisiana. Why would there be? And I don't need to go into the massive canyon separating the quality of life difference when comparing BR to Houston/Dallas...

Louisiana is backwards in so many ways. Just look at the telecommunication restrictions, laws and regulations they have.

What's odd is if you travel up in the northern parts in the state you couldn't even recognize it. Like north LA has a totally different viewpoint. Obviously, I'm speaking the more urban sections not the rural.

very true.

If an IT person from Louisiana has any talent, they can find a MUCH better situation in Texas no matter their area of expertise in IT.

In any field too: Healthcare IT, O&G IT, Banking IT, IT IT...whatever
cybersecurity, automation, virtualization, network, database, server, active directory, windows, linux, webhosting, and coding in every flavor of the IT rainbow. got all of it, all over.

Step 1: don't let the motivated in state talent walk out the door when they graduate because your cheap.
Step 2: doesn't really matter if step 1 isn't successful.

That’s why IBM opened in Baton Rouge.

Haha, the state is cheap? Didn't know they set the market value.

Most entry level jobs I've seen are 30-32k but I have seen some starting around 27k. They do mostly want 2-3 years experience too. I don't understand who would be looking for entry level jobs with that kind of experience. True entry level jobs don't seem to exist in Baton Rouge.

ehhh, why do i care. no longer a problem for me. the it industry in louisiana is shite and will likely be shite for the immediate future. because there is no talent, no incentives, shite pay, and shite quality of life compared to other states with booming it industries.

here's a sad but true comparison. full-time Geek Squad employees in Texas make a better starting salary than IBM BR employees.

Think about it. The market improves and everyone in your industry gets a raise.

Thats the wrong attitude. Everyone wants them to fail so they can complain more.

That is the Louisiana way.

Seriously, I am not joking. People in this state would rather see someone or something fail so they can complain than see someone or something succeed. That is the biggest reason why La is in the shape that it is in.

What does that office specialize in?

Traveling consultants with specialization in some kind of Enterprise system make substantially more than $46K per year. Even the BA’s start at almost double that. Senior Cons and Managers are more like $145K-$200K at the big 4, and I’m sure IBM is close to that.

SAP, Oracle, Microsoft

The consultants at the IBM BR office are well aware of the pay gap and that is why they can't meet the quota. They hire a lot of people, but they only stay for a year of experience and leave for double the pay.

A cousin and 2 friends of mine went through 3 interviews to get an entry level position with IBM a while back.

2 are CS grads and 1 has his MBA

All denied.

If they are paying $46K, what is it a call center?
