Florida power outage total has reached 2 million customers
18.1 percent of all Florida customers.
And the heavily populated Orlando metro has just started losing power.

Brother already lost power in Jacksonville Beach though.
Parts of fleming island went down too, and that surprises me this early.

No worries. I learned in another thread that everyone has natural gas gensets or solar panels.

That looked metal as frick. I want to ride along in one someday.
I wouldn't turn it down, but maybe start off with a Sally. We'll see where it goes from there.

This is apparently a photo from Ft. Myers Beach this afternoon, after much of the damage had been done. Don’t have a source for the picture, unfortunately.
ETA: can confirm this is Ft. Myers Beach. Very close to the fishing pier we were watching the live stream from today with the guys who were in the water.

Naples Fire Rescue team rescuing a person stranded in his car due to severe flooding in Naples #HurricaneIan
Ummm, got to ask a question here: Is he wearing a mask? Is he holding something? Unless that’s an animal or a baby, what the frick. This seems like Darwin nominee territory. Good for the firefighters, but the frick?
EDIT: Apparently it’s a she.

Our camera got hit by some huge piece of debris and ended up like this.
Then, a boat went by.
In downtown Fort Myers.
It’s been a weird day.

Good hypothesis for this one rapidly intensifying could be there were not many storms in the Gulf this year to cool the waters.
I see where you're coming from, but that's not it.
A number of these recent cases, you could see it coming. Laura and Ida were set up to strengthen through landfall. Michael had a few more questions, but there was a good case for late strengthening due to position relative to a trough.
I need to revisit Harvey someday soon.
This one? Had completed an eyewall replacement, which yeah would allow it to strengthen from that point. It was starting to feel westerly shear last night. Even appeared to get a some dry air in the circulation as the cycle completed.
The previous few days were primed for explosive intensification, but those good conditions were starting to fade last night.
My shot in the dark thought is the shear was coming from the west and it was starting to feel friction from Florida to the east. I wonder if it's possible these forces helped contract the eye faster and take advantage of the warm water there.
IDK. Might just be something simple like big storm doesn't care about shear as much and could keep working off the warm water below.

Fort Myers got over 7 feet of storm surge last time I had checked.
