I wish old-style motels would make a comeback

There's something fulfilling about being able to back my truck up in a parking spot mere feet from the door to my room. Unfortunately, most motels today cater to bad crowds. I just want a clean room. I don't need a fancy lobby, free breakfast, conference rooms, or a snooty desk clerk greeting me every time I enter and leave a hotel.

Real estate and taxes are too damn high to make it profitable now. That’s why the seedy old motels are shitholes

Old motels are seedy when they're in shitty parts of town, which are shitty b/c I don't want to get banned

Used to love those places when we vacationed when I was a kid. Big thrill to see them advertise color TV on the sign

There's still a few decent ones in operation

I stayed at the Austin Motel on South Congress with the wife a couple of weekends ago. It was great to experience the nostalgia of a place like that. It was a really nice experience all around.

Agreed. Brings back memories of vacations when I was a kid. Loved the old school motels.

We stayed in more than a few outside hallway type motels but they were usually the chain ones so not as shitty.

I'd probably still stay in them if not for the social (and wife) pressure not to.

I remember my parents driving down the highway looking for vacancy signs.

Stayed in one just like you’re talking about in Augusta last yr for The Masters. Two story, outside entrance doors to every room. It was normally a $60 per night room that we paid $400 a night for Tues and Wed during the tournament. It was a shithole with new paint!

There are still a number of them on the main drag in Cheyenne, WY. I enjoyed seeing the old-school signs. They looked OK but the wife required a Marriott.

There are a lot along the Pennsylvania Turnpike in western PA. They fill up in summer.

There's a really charming one just south of Milford NJ where the children or grandchildren of the original owners have fixed up all the cabins.

The one universal beware is the ownership by a certain family that isn't from Europe. Surnames matter.
